Router bits: 1/4" vs 8mm

I have one of those 8mm collets. It came with the corded unit. Curiously, the cordless ones don't include it? Maybe they are trying to discourage the use of bigger bits on the cordless model?

Would be a cost target/optimisation thing. In Europe they come with 8 mm universally.

Do the larger routers come with a 12mm or 1/2" collet usually? The Euro stuff I've bought always seems to come with metric collets. About the only time I wish they were imperial as standard given the prevalence of cheap 1/2" cutters here..

That could be. It takes a little effort to find 8mm bits here and the casual user probably wouldn't bother, so it would be wasted.

In the US, most routers that have 1/2" collets will also come with a 1/4 collet too. The only metric collets I have ever seen here are 8mm, and they are in the Festool family (Shaper too)
I think the one that came with my corded Makita is because it was part of a set that included all of the optional bases, in a canvas tote bag.
