Selecting wood species for doors

Luke,
I did not get the chance yesterday, but had a little time this morning from 3 to 4 am to look at several of Paul sellers vids.  I thank you for mentioning him. He has been using hand planes forever and has a lot of great advice.  I knew a lot of what he talks/demos about, but have not practiced for many moons.  Some stuff was new advice for me.  If you follow his demos and advice, you will find you can do a lot that you don't realize.  My main reasons for not using hand planes, and dozens of other armstrong powered tools has been a perception that i do not have the time. It is true that power toys can get it done so much quicker, and so I have gone along with that tide.

For the last year or so, i have been taking a little more time to both observe wood grain in relation to the project at hand; and I have been trying out more and more of my old hand tools that have not been used since I started a masonry biz back in the early 1950's.  that was during an earlier life as I am only 39, you know. Or maybe I am just a poor mathematician.

Even tho I am getting interested in some of the old tools (many handed down from my Dad), I am still not throwing such toys as my HL 850 onto the scrap heap.

We are a very, very sick group of people here.  Who else watches an hour video of a guy hand planing a piece of firewood?  At 3AM.  And stay awake.  And remember the techniques.  Who does that????
I've watched that series probably 5 or 6 times.  But not between the hours of 11PM and 7AM

The timber arrives today and I will begin making sawdust.  I mean doors.

Luke, 3am is when I get up in the morning >>> every day.  Doesn't everybody arise that early? [eek]  I have, upon very few occasions, been related to as a "turkey".  Could be.  When the sun goes down, I am done, as in nearly dead to the world.  But i am ready to crow long before the sun is even thinking to shine on the day.

I have not watched all of Sellers vids, but so far I have not seen any sign of a power tool in his shop.

Started a new thread on "Tools and Acc" on my new HL850.  Since I discussed it here I am duplicating the post...

After wanting one for a long time, my HL850 arrived today.
I started with a perfectly straight edge on 5/4 hard maple and made it wavy.  Without using the rustic blade.

This is going to take some practice.  There are several HL850 review videos but nothing that shows how to basically use it.  Start with the toe? Start with the heal?    I think I was focusing too much on keeping the fence against the board.  I think tomorrow I will take the fence off.  Started with .4mm depth

With a hand plane I can see what's going on.  How and where the shavings come off.  I'm closer to the work.  It's gonna take some practice because it didn't come naturally.  Maybe I should buy the rustic blade  [smile]
