Iam looking at buying the xl and wanted to add the adaptor for the benefit of being able to use the 500 cutters. Wanted to know how users of the xl like this adaptor . Iam torn between getting the 500 or the xl ,but with the adaptor it seems you get the best of both tools.

I have been using my adapter for more than a week or so, and I've loved it.  Not having the 500, I can't make a comparison to it in terms of ease of use.  I can tell you that it's easy to install the adapter and use it on the XL.  I just finished up most of the joining on a single kitchen cabinet, and it's been a joy to use the XL even when considering weight.  It doesn't seem heavy at all once you get cracking on something.

The guys at Seneca are awesome to work with also.  I accidentally sent my order to Kazakhstan instead of Kansas (fast fingers on the keyboard), and they shipped out a replacement for me pretty darn quick after I realized my error.

I also have the adapter and XL combo. I have used it for about 3 projects in the last 6 months and have gone from 4mm (built a doll bed for my daughter) to 6mm (built a desk for my son) and then dropped the adapter and did some 8/10/12 dominos for larger projects.

I have no desire to have a 500. I tried them both out at the store and left with the XL in hand. If you get the XL and do any ½ or ¾ casework, also get the domi-shims. They help a lot!

Good luck. Bryan.

Highly recommend the XL and adapter.

I was also thinking of getting the domino assortment for the 500 so I have all the bits and add the larger xl bits as I need them.

That's exactly what I did in addition to the domi-shims.

I have read mixed reviews on getting the kit with the trim stop . Are the two accessories worth it or buy just the tool.

For 3/4" (19mm) material I set the fence height to 10mm as this is the center position of the tenon. I haven't used the XL on 1/2" material yet, this is where the Seneca shim plate might be useful. If only Seneca sold the 1/2" shim separately...

I've got both Dominos yet bought the bit adaptor. Not sure why, but it seemed a good idea when I ordered the XL shims.

I use the Seneca shims on the XL and the Domiplate on the 500. They greatly enhance the productivity of both machines. Both products are well worth the money.

There are a couple of things the 500 does that would be very hard with the XL, but I'm beginning to prefer the XL over the 500. That surprises me.

Can you elaborate on what the 500 does better than the XL based on your experience?  I'm considering going the Xl plus adapter route; however, the majority of my planned projects would be served by the 500.  I can;t afford both.

I made the jump last night and ordered the xl, 8 and 10mm bits, the domino assortment for the 500, bit adaptor and shims.

There is a trick I learned from a Halfinchshy video that works for putting tenons into the middle of a board's span that doesn't work for the XL.There may be certainly similar tricks for the XL, but I don't know them.

Also, I use the 500 for small boxes using the 500's tiny 4mm tenons. The XL is so big that doing small boxes is difficult for me.

If I had to buy just one of the 2 machines, the choice would be determined by the work I had to do. Medium to large .... the XL. Small to medium .... the 500.

Whichever machine, I'd buy the accessory kits with all the cutters and tenons. I'd also buy the Seneca shims. In my early enthusiasm, I bought a number of after market accessories for the 500. They are never used. The Seneca shims that facilitate working with 1/2 and 3/4 material are valuable add-ons.
