" told the investigating officer, who actually came out to the house, that I knew who did it. While walking around the house with him, I noticed their lighter on the floor and pointed out that it would have their fingerprints. His response was to grab the lighter, light it, say, "cool lighter", and stick it in his pocket. Then he told me that if I wanted any of my stuff back, to go to all the pawn shops.
I was incensed!
I suspect there must be good police forces somewhere but that incident didn't make me think that the fourth largest city in the nation was included in the list of those that have one. I don't know why they would even send someone out. I guess it's dangerous to approach actual known criminals, while racing around in an overpowered car to pull over relatively law abiding citizens is pretty safe."
Had to let a day or two pass before I weighed in on this issue... I for one have had almost universally good service from my local police department. Whenever I've called the response was timely and courteous. On those occasions I've been pulled over while driving it was because I was at fault. I'd suggest that if someone isn't getting the service they deserve that they kick it upstairs, ask a supervisor to review it and see if it can't be resolved.
For what its worth here in Florida all pawn transactions are highly documented. If the mope pawned it and you were diligent enough to record you serial number its a slam dunk for the stolen property detective to make a recovery and arrest. Craigslist is an entirely different story.
I hope Tom's personal attitude about the local police force is his and not that of the company he represents.
Sorry for the rant, my sympathy is definitely with the victim in this case, anybody want to talk 'bout woodworking?
