Shop/Addition build has commenced

Tayler, that is some great progress, plus you probably got bonus points for not canceling the dinner reservation.

So I took out the electrical boxes in the floor since it is in a residential garage they were a pain in the but to meet code. ...

That's too bad.

One thing that they do down under that is different from the states is the incoming water goes down from the top, rather than up from the slab.

Or does it differ by decade or region in the US?

Where I live now, 12 inches is deep enough to avoid frost heave.  Other places in the U. S. I've lived it was 4 feet.  It varies widely, in other words.

So yesterday we made good progress on the addition. We built the north wall with the garage doors and put the header in for the walk through door from the garage to the mid room. Than we built the 10 ft load wall for the stair well and to rest the trusses. Than we set all the trusses and sheeted the top. It was a lot of work for one day and didn't quite get it all done and had to finish the last 5 or 6 sheets.

Now I will have to leave the addition for awhile and go finish the dental practice I am working on. After that my fiancé and I are off to the Prince of Wales hotel in Canada to get married. So there won't be anymore progress till we arrive home the 16th of August.

One year later and I have finally finished the entire addition. I never had anytime throughout the build so I dropped off the Earth for the year. The bank put us to a tight deadline and with some unfortunate circumstances we were put in I had to do everything from framing-electrical-plumbing-insulation-drywall-and all the finishes.

I figured I'd bring the thread alive and continue where I left off

So after my last post on this thread my wife and I went to the prince of wales in Watertown, Alberta Canada to get married. When we returned back home it was back to work.

We started the second floor got it sheeted and wrapped. Went pretty quickly but I didn't have any help so i had to put up 9' walls on a second floor by myself. It was a challenge but I was lucky my new wife could help level the walls and brace them. I had a hand sheeting wrapping and setting the windows though.

More to come...some progress photos.

After we got the house wrapped we hit hard with siding. We used LP smart side with a 15 year paint and a 6 inch lap. We also made all the trim ourselves out of rough sawn  cedar. We prefinished each piece of cedar before cutting to size and glueing. We used a marine grade spar varnish from Pratt lambert called vitralite. I've been using it for years on Cedar signs and had great luck with it. I figure after year one I'll have to scrape and refinish. After that I don't think I'll have to re-coat for five years. I glued the frames together before putting them on the house and used 4 8mm mahogany dominos in each joint.

Unfortunately we didn't start siding until a week before thanksgiving and didn't give us enough time to finish before the snow came in. Most winters I would easily of finished after the first snow however we got continuously pounded with snow until we had a good 4-5' drift against our the house. We ended up getting so much snow after one of the storms our plows were not able to move the snow and had to rely on contractors around town with their front end loaders.

It was a rough winter but instead of siding I moved into the inside and figured it would be fine without siding since it was at least wrapped.
