Hi
Looking for a short 36mm hose for Kapex to sys vac. I know a larger vacuum is recommended but I'm looking for a short/cut down hose that will fit from kapex to sys vac. Called Festool and got a part number but turns out that part number is for a long hose. Thanks in advance for any info on where to get/buy a short 36 mm hose.
Thanks
Brian

The old style hoses that were ribbed could be cut and new ends attached to make two hoses (or just one short hose, but at the cost of a hose that seems wasteful).  They were 36mm throughout.

Bob Marino sold short (like 18") 27mm hoses like that, with two ends which acted as a converter from the 36mm hose to your 27mm tools.

I expect that doesn't work on the new hoses with the smooth sides because they are tapered, but am not sure.

If you are in US, unfortunately the hoses are not sold by the meter like in Europe.

Your best bets are:
A) get the Cleaning set part #577258 with the 3.5m D36 hose.
- cut the hose (the ends can be taken apart, is pretty easy) to the length you need.
- keep the tubes and brush, sell on the Systainer
- from the rest of the hose, add 204920 and 500670 to make another shorter hose and either sell it on or keep as applicable

B) get the 5 meter 204925 long hose
- cut the hose (the ends can be taken apart, is pretty easy) to the length you need.
- from the rest of the hose, add 204920 and 500670 to make another complete hose and either sell it on or keep as applicable

I would avoid buying the 3.5 meter D36 hose standalone and cutting that one. The left over piece will be just too short - unless you had a specific use for it already. With the cleaning set this is at least compensated for by the other items adding value.

Can the Festool 36mm end (Festool 204920) be attached to a non-Festool hose, specifically a Cen-Tec?

Not sure what is Cen-Tec, but IMO any 36 mm hose will do. The old 36 mm non-antistatic hoses were anything like the new ones and the connectors worked fine.

The new hoses are just more fiddly to properly push in the braiding, but it does not go inside the thread. So does not really impact compatibility either way.

Very helpful post, thank you for this, and for including the part numbers for the connector/sleeve!

Before coming across your post, I just called Festool to ask about cutting a 36mm hose and what parts I would need to add connectors at the cut ends. The rep I spoke with was emphatic, and repeated: "we do not recommend cutting the hose." He also told me that if I do cut the hose, I will not be able to attach new connectors to the cut ends.

I've seen several posts in the FOG from folks who have cut their hoses, specifically to make a shortened one for a Kapex (which is what I'm trying to do), and none who indicated they had trouble adding connectors to the cut ends. Is the Festool rep just telling me what he's been trained to say, or has something changed with Festool hoses such that some or all of the newer ones now cannot be used once cut? In case it matters, mine is a braided 36mm 3.5-meter hose (204924). I've searched far and wide for any video of someone cutting and/or re-attaching ends to a hose like this, but been unable to find one.

I've also tried removing the end from my hose without damaging it, to get a sense as to what re-attaching to a cut hose end might be like. After popping off the outer housing of the connector, which is simple enough with a flathead screwdriver, I've been unable to remove the black plastic ring that's attached to the hose end. I've read that this screws off, but that hasn't worked for me, so I wonder if this may be different for the braided hoses (or for the 204924 hose specifically).

I just posted to classifieds in search of a shortened hose, but would also be willing to cut the one I have. The Festool rep left me scared of that route, though, so I'm trying to do due diligence before cutting to make sure.

It's of no importance on this end that it be matching or green, as long as I can find the right connectors to plug it into a CT 15 and the Kapex.

I was planning to go with a 36mm hose, rather than a 50mm, because from the data I've seen the extraction efficiency gain of 50mm over 36mm is fairly marginal (on the order of 10-15%), and it won't require drilling as large a hole in the shelf that I'll be routing the dust hose through. But to save the $200+ that a Festool hose and another set of connectors will cost me, I can justify drilling the larger hole (and certainly wouldn't mind the extraction efficiency gain too)!

It’s left thread. Turn like you’re tightening

A lot of us use a 50 mm hose that can be bought at whatever length you want (not Festool) and works even better
If you just want a matching green hose that’s another thing

I bought the zero clearance throat plate kit kit from Inspire Woodcraft -- the verdict is still out on how well it works -- that includes an adapter for attaching a D27, D36, or 2.5" shop vac hose.

Even with the added cost of the kit ($53) you can get a short run of hose from the big box store ($33) and still come in way under the price you'd pay for a green hose.

I should note that I plugged the shop vac hose into a Fein Turbo 1. To get a snug fit on my CT MIDI, I needed to wrap the end with some blue tape.
