Some interesting Pliers

    Got these IPS brand long reach pliers from Japan. About 12" long with a variety of gripping surfaces. Knipex (and probably others) makes very similar pliers called assembly pliers. These however are unique to any I have seen in that they are also slip joint. The Knipex are 28 71 280  and 28 81 280.

    I actually used the straight nose pair on something where the slip joint made a real difference. They are also the best thing I have used to hold a cable staple while hammering it home. I have used needle nose to hold staples but the staple can still twist and turn under impact. The little notch in these prevent that from happening. There is also a pair of thin angled nose slip joint in the picture showing the long reach in the wide position. Same IPS brand and another that I have seen by other makers.

Nice set!

I recently bought the Knipex version, angled.
Like it a lot since it extends the reach nicely but also gives a lot of control.
Used on the car and a lot of other small repairs..

Never seen that style in a slip- joint... I have similar needle nose pliers with the cut out in the jaws, they’re made for holding steel roll pins for easier installation.
You’ve got the same idea with your Cable Staples... [thumbs up] [thumbs up]

There is straight thin version available as well. And I think two different lengths / sizes. 160mm and the 180mm if I recall.

I was interested in the nylon jaws but saw a lot of reviews that said they didn't grip well and wore out quickly.  What is your take on that?  Which model do you have?

To purchase through Amazon.jp ?    It was easy.  Just go to amazon.jp make an account / sign up just like on the USA site or any other Amazon. Find what you want and order. I used google translate. And most things are the same buttons in the same places. On some pages I didn't feel the need to bother translating.  I have ordered twice both times it was only 4 days for shipping from Japan and the price was very reasonable for international shipping,  $10- $15. When looking at prices it is  (currently)  divide yen by 100 to get USD. It is currently a close ratio. EX- 2,500 yen is close to $25. Delivery was by DHL.

1 inch opening, 8 inches overall

Mine get used for tasks where I am worried about damage: anodized aluminum, fishing reels, blued rifle parts, etc.  These tasks usually do not require a huge amount of force.

I managed to slightly deform the nylon inserts while trying to disassemble an old MagLite.  The end cap of the MagLite was about halfway into the width of the jaws, but the pliers slipped off and took roughly a 1/8 inch chunk out of the nylon on one side.

Good to know. When I read the reviews I wondered if maybe some were over tasking the pliers. I also note that replacement jaw inserts are readily available.  I think for those things that need more grip Knipex 250 Cobras with jaw protectors are the thing to use. I have those and they are great!

Looks like I will be checking out the soft grip IPS.
