Splinter guard

i never had a problem with the black uns i just ran a chisel down them(not a good 1, my ripping out chisel.still sharp tho) Cleaned the rail stuck the new 1 on.

Maybe they should use the same glue as masking tape so you put it on your rail wait 2 weeks and will never get the damn thing off.

I think the splinter guards are what makes the rail saw better then a straight edge and a side winder.

Now I can make straight splinter cuts several different ways.

I put mine on with a j roller too, so that is not it.

The adhesive sucks, plain and simple.

Now it falls of I do care! As its annoying! Every time I slide it into my guide rail bag it catches and pulls its self of even more! So Annoying!

Don't put it in the guide rail bag then...seriously, have you tried reattaching it with some transfer tape

thats the first thing on my mindwhen i have just paid well over the odds for a piece of rubber, spend more money t make it work as it should

[big grin]  Glad I'm not alone on this!  Cheers!

I changed my mind, the clear ones are fine, in fact i dont know why they bother putting glue on at all(not sure they did on mine)

With regard to not putting the rails in the bag !!!

I was kidding. I haven't changed my splinter guard, even though I burned one and another has a nice slice in it from a errant knife blade...hope I don't have to in the near future...you guys have put the fear of god in me.

I have a 800mm rail with the clear splinterguard, it travels in the small pocket of the Festool bag everyday.  I haven't had any problem with it in the two or so years I've owned it.  My 3000mm rail gets a lot less use, no problem there either.  Maybe I'm just lucky.

I cleaned the old adhesive off mine and used Fastcaps double stick tape to put it back on and also used it on old ones to move in to make a fresh cut. That sucker is not going to fall off anymore.  [big grin]

+1 for the Fastcap tape. I re-did several rails with this tape. They stick - no issues at all. However, I have never tried to remove the tape, so I can't comment on that. Regarding methods of removing old glue, Brian showed us a pretty efficient way to do it. Just take a piece of scrap material about 8" long (I used 1x2 cherry), put a 45 deg miter on one end. Use this to scrape off the old residue. When it loses it's effectiveness, just cut another 1/16" off and keep scraping. It works amazingly well, and there's no risk of scratching the rail or slicing yourself with a razor blade.

Thanks, that's definitely worth knowing!

The scrap wood scraper is a good idea !

I would be interested to know how easy it is to remove the strips from the FastCap tape. Has anyone done it ?

That fastcap tape sticks and it is not meant to come off! You have one chance with that stuff so if you use it the position better be perfect and I mean perfect the first time.

I use the fastcap tape to hold my metal V-rails on a CNC machine and it does not move!

I have not used it on a guide rail, but I assume it sticks to that metal the same way, great tape I love it, but not made to ever be taken off and definitely not for repositioning any thing.

I doubt you will get any lift using the fastcap tape though. I'll try it on a rail and let you know.

So if Festool ever switches all of their TS blades to use a narrow kerf, you'll need to replace all of your rails?

I rarely post on here, but this subect get's my blood boiling.  I'm a remodel contractor and travel with my tool's in a trailer.  I've gone through four of the clear strips in the last year and a half.  What happens is they start peeling and saw dust gets on the strip making it virtually impossible to re-apply the strips.  Now I wouldn't make such a fuss, but when you're paying $30 for a piece of rubber that fails time and time again and are told from the company that makes and sell's it to try a different approach to attach it or try a different adhesive, that is just straight up wrong.  You should take care of this before another one is sold and reimburse those that have spent money on a failed product.  It's the same thing with the Ct vacum plug.  Why should we spend ton's of money on a product and be told to fix an inherent problem on our own dime?

[thumbs up]

Its exactally how I feel and why I had my little rant and why Woodguy had his and Dean and Alan! Cus it is wrong!  Its only a splinter guard strip but its the principle of it!

Any way seems to be a pattern most of us are all from this side of the pond moaning about it?    I think!!   Just a thought! but we seem to be the only ones to say it as it is?  I feel across the pond they are to scared to say bad stuff about festool or is it just me?

When ever we have a few European people saying this an that is rubbish or what ever.     We get a few posts from across the pond just giving suggestions and/or nothing and  1 or 2 saying  I have had mine for many many years never had a problem.  Its like if you dont have anything good to say you dont say it.

Your one of the few exceptions Everygreen!
