Splinter guard

I rarely post on here, but this subect get's my blood boiling.  I'm a remodel contractor and travel with my tool's in a trailer.  I've gone through four of the clear strips in the last year and a half.  What happens is they start peeling and saw dust gets on the strip making it virtually impossible to re-apply the strips.  Now I wouldn't make such a fuss, but when you're paying $30 for a piece of rubber that fails time and time again and are told from the company that makes and sell's it to try a different approach to attach it or try a different adhesive, that is just straight up wrong.  You should take care of this before another one is sold and reimburse those that have spent money on a failed product.  It's the same thing with the Ct vacum plug.  Why should we spend ton's of money on a product and be told to fix an inherent problem on our own dime?

[thumbs up]

Its exactally how I feel and why I had my little rant and why Woodguy had his and Dean and Alan! Cus it is wrong!  Its only a splinter guard strip but its the principle of it!

Any way seems to be a pattern most of us are all from this side of the pond moaning about it?    I think!!   Just a thought! but we seem to be the only ones to say it as it is?  I feel across the pond they are to scared to say bad stuff about festool or is it just me?

When ever we have a few European people saying this an that is rubbish or what ever.     We get a few posts from across the pond just giving suggestions and/or nothing and  1 or 2 saying  I have had mine for many many years never had a problem.  Its like if you dont have anything good to say dont say it.

lol nope  [tongue] [tongue] [tongue]

Yea, when I raised the issue with my dealer ages ago they said they had a lot of complaints about it & they told Festool.  There answer was we have never heard that before & we don't believe there to be a problem.

JMB, there are a few stateside that are not happy with the clear strip but I bet there is a lot more not coming forward.  I still really rate Festool but when there is a problem they should deal with it.  This is the reason more people should come forward, it's how things get noticed & then fixed.

Perhaps someone should start a poll on this as was mentioned earlier.  Perhaps with a secret ballot people will vote freely ?

If it's like secret nailing, I'm in!

I shall ask him next time I'm round at his place.  On that subject, I do a lot of work for James Fleming. He's the nephew of Ian Fleming, the creator of Bond.  His house is full of Bond stuff  [big grin]

Tell me you don't go to work there in a tux and sip martinis during break.  [big grin]

I'm guessing you have your CXS in a shoulder holster?

I have a 800mm rail with the clear splinterguard, it travels in the small pocket of the Festool bag everyday.  I haven't had any problem with it in the two or so years I've owned it.  My 3000mm rail gets a lot less use, no problem there either.  Maybe I'm just lucky.

You are :)

Why does the splinter guard need to have adhesive on it at all?

How about a track built into the edge of the aluminum extrusion that the plastic splinter guard simply slides into??  Could be secured on the ends with small clips??  Perhaps friction would make it difficult to slide it all the way into one of the longer tracks and still maintain a tight fit, but I think it might be doable....

What do you think?

Well we all know another company that uses a system like that. It slides in.

The strips have started to come off at the ends of my 3000 rail.  When I put a new one on I'll be certain to use a j roller.  To be honest I don't know if I ever had an issue with the black strips.  I just remember it being nearly impossible to get the strip and all the adhesive off.

Good thought, but consider this - if you use this concept, the splinter guard is a one-trick pony.  If it gets worn or dinged, it becomes a throw-away.  On the other hand, if the splinter guard is a tape-on (with a decent adhesive), it can be re-used multiple times by simply moving it a touch outward and re-taping it.

Idea!  You could have multiple little ridges Inside the guide rail groove and on the splinter guard  so you can simply pull out the splinter guard move it across and slide it back in again allowing you to use it multiple times?  but one thing the splinter guard has to be rebated to allow it to sit flat in the material of course so the bottom lip would have to be set in a little to allow this multiple use.

i find it quite disgusting that such a primium brand cant recognise that there is a fundimental flaw in this product. im sure they do know but wort fix it. that is a disgrace. why is there no comment from any of the festool staff on the fog here. they all read it. for such a primium brand if only one customer is having such a thing happen it should be a priority to fix it and do right by that one customer. when several loyal customers are reporting it something should be done very quickly.

the next time i buy and put on a new strip  and it falls off i will  be returning it and demanding my money back.

I know Festool UK reads this Forum FOG  as I keep being told

1.They HATE FOG and want it closing down

2. You know I just been having this Kapex warrenty problem well it was mentioned that they had read what I was putting on fog about my service experience and they said they best honour the warranty because I would post on Fog about it if they didnt.

I was then told its wrong that they have to feel like that because of FOG as its  like keeping Festool UK under ransom!  BUT to me thats a good thing as it forces them to do the right thing by the customer keeps them on der toes  but also! If they kept their customers happy then they would not have to be afraid of FOG.

Am I right or am I wrong?   They will properly be reading this also.
