Split Top Roubo Bench Build

Thanks Tom, for some time now I have been thinking I will need a TS 75...I gotta cut some 6/4 white oak to fix a couple messed up stairs...

I cut 8/4 white with the 55 before I got the 75. With the 28 tooth blade it cut the QSWO very well.

Tom,
I am very grateful that you took the time to make and post the video.

IMO your saw sounds very different from mine.  Not to mention you are cutting hard maple instead of soft.
Festool should receive my saw today.  They gave me the option of trying another blade first.  I am glad I decided to send the saw in to be checked out as I will know if there truly is a problem.  It's a mechanical thing and things can break.  I really don't care how or why, I simply want a saw that performs like yours.

I will probably go into freakout mode if they say nothing is wrong with the saw.  It's not personal and I'll have to accept it but I have mental issues where frustration spins up quickly.  Thank God for meds.  This is a sidebar and probably too much information but I don't mind talking about it because mental illness is real.

Thanks again for the video.

But back to metal hardware on this one.  Surfer Aussie Jord takes us through his whole build in which he uses spruce 2x4s and 2x6s for all the stock, and relatively inexpensive screws for his vises.
That was very cool.  A great bench from 2x4s !!

Listening to "Strine," or English spoken by an Australian, is like opening a time capsule.  Established as a British penal colony about a hundred years ago, its "settlers" were those transported there, and their guards.  No Mayfair posh accents at all.  The Aussie accent today is probably the way most all Brits spoke then.

Gene,
Those videos are great!!!
I esp. like David Barron's approach to the joints.

Kudos for mentioning this, it's past time for mental illness to stop being hidden away.

Hi
I've been really enjoying this thread (with the cabinet build to.which is great)

Can't wait until you get your saw back and can get on with it. Keep up the good work

Thanks Mick!

I made some progress today with the front slab.  Another hour with the planer and I'll be ready to bore some reference dominos and glue her up.  Note two sticks where I took narrow stock and made it wider.  I didn't want to waste lumber.  It will only show on the ends.

TS75 UPDATE:
Festool support notified me that they have shipped a new TS75 and Universal Blade.
They recommended that I use the standard blade for shipping.

Powematic PM2800B drill press:
I haven't been real happy with the bit stability / run out.  I called support a week back and they sent a new chuck and arbor.  I bought a machinist's dial and stand at Harbor Freight and a 1/2" tight tolerance drill rod from McMaster Carr.  I have no idea if I performed the tests in this video correctly.  The measurement at the arbor is great.

I've got the TS75 and yours definitely sounds odd.  Have you looked inside the housing to see if a piece of wood is stuck in there somewhere?

Festool has it now.
They are sending me a new one.

Powermatic PM2800B

After all the hocus pocus machinist's stuff I decided to lube the chuck with 3M 08897 silicone dry lubricant, chuck up a bit, set the speed to 1650, and drill a hole in hard maple.  I removed the bit and put the shank end into the hole.  It was nice and tight.

I brand new Porter Cable 1" forstner bit into soft maple read 1.01" on Mitutoyo calipers.

What more can I ask for?

Back to the Roubo build and another boring picture.  Not for me.
The front slab is ready to get registration dominos and glue.
The slab is at it's final 198mm width.  The depth is presently 107mm.  It will be planed to 102mm spec after the glue is dry and the surface tweaked.

Doing a good job registering the height is important because I only have 5mm left for planning.

I will post photos along the way.

I went "All In" on the David Barron dove tail leg joint with wedges.
I have to increase the leg width from 89mm to 130mm, but I have the material to do it and the legs will almost be square.  I have not decided If I will dovetail the front face.

Glue tomorrow...
