STM 1800 Quality (Changed Subject to Shipping Damage Issues?)

Im interested in this table. I have a smallish shop 12x20 and a herniated disc so being able to help lift a sheet is always nice. I want a place to break down plywood but I also need an assembly table. I use my floor to assemble cabinets and its the worst thing for my back. But it's so pricey it's hard to pull the trigger on. I bought all my festool used or from recon. Maybe I will get lucky and it pops up on recon black friday? One can dream.

if I buy new where do you guys recommend for usa?

If you buy new it doesn’t matter from where as far as prices is concerned. Maybe if you buy from a closer dealer there will be fewer truck transfers so maybe it will arrive without damage but it seems they often have one particular minor problem which sometimes seems to be incurred at the factory, so maybe that doesn’t matter either.

Mine had a two broken pieces and I just called and ordered them. No big deal. The box was ravaged though so no surprise that there was damage.

where can I order more pre-cut sacrificial  boards for the table.  Mine have seen better days

If you have a table saw, just buy a nice 2x6 at the big box.  You should be able to make a bunch of them for not too much time or money.  Just measure the existing ones, and rip it down.  For bonus points use an 1/8" roundover on all the sides.

I bought it when it only available for a limited time and the box was ravaged. A couple of broken pieces that Festool replaced.

You will be better off with maple which is what I think was provided with it.

I absolutely love mine, I’m 72, I it’s great for putting cling up sheets.  I use sacrificial sheets to cut on.  I’ve made MFT style tops to cut and assemble on.

You can order them thru the Festool USA ekat system as spare parts.  Once you see the prices you might consider cutting you own because I can't tell if the prices are for just one or one set of all that size for the STM.

Hey Peter that link does not work.  You have a better one?  Thanks

I'm sorry, I forgot that links to the eat don't work because they are a single instance type of thing.  Thanks [member=58842]guybo[/member] for helping out!

Peter

Wanted to add my thoughts on this after 1 year in use both in the shop and in the field for installs:

1. Mine arrived with the broken parts. Festool warranty took care of me pretty promptly.
2. Just from general use the locking mechanism on one of the casters has fallen apart on me, I've since had to replace that caster.
3. For installs I use a trailer to transport my tools. If I didn't and ran a van I probably would choose a lighter weight option than this, but because of that the heaviness doesn't bother me and I find that it's a great tool to have on site for use when doing scribes.
4. At the shop a delivery truck driver dropped a piece of 5'x10' 1" thick MDF from 10' onto it. It bent a few locking pins and two of the casters and two of the extensions. Obviously this is out of scope of what it was designed for but I was able to replace the parts from eKat fairly drama free. All things considered it held up really well to that.
5. Throw out any ideas of this being flat-ish or coplanar. it's a cutting stand and the stand itself conforms to whatever floor you are on. Even on concrete floors do not expect this to provide you a flat, assembly table type surface. I wish the when using it for outfeed of MFT height tools they made it sit 5mm lower to accommodate this.
6. I use the tip-up feature far less often than I expected. It's kind of fiddly and silly in use. I end up sliding a stack of material out of the truck horizontal onto it, and then use stickers between sheets to do my rip cuts before transferring to the larger table saw.

Overall, I use the heck out of this thing. I think it's definitely overpriced a bit but I've certainly got my monies worth.
