T15-3, is it really worth it?

Alex,

Haven't you found that one of the joys of working with wood is that you will buy something because you are so sure that you'll use it and then put it away only to be discovered years later?  Kind of like getting it twice? [big grin]

I have a 10 x 12 building full of them.

Peter

Or if your like me you find them after you've bought another one so it's like getting them three times, which I've actually done. I needed to replace an china bristle brush for oil paint, bought a new purdy only to find a new one at home. When I needed them, both gone, bought a third and you can guess what happened next.

Uhm, nope, not really. I am a very conscientious  buyer. I'm not buying anything unless I really need it. I also don't think I got the amount of tools you have Peter, so it's easier to keep oversight.

That's the reason I have a couple dozen utility knives (and still can't find one when I need it).  [big grin]

Ok, I budged for the temptation and bought it.

I am now the proud owner of a T15+3. My fifth Festool already in 1 year time.

My wallet probably won't be on speaking terms with me for the next two weeks, but I got a feeling this tool might earn itself back very quickly.

Funny thing is, when I went to the guy, when he opened the door he looked at me and said ..... "I know you. I have seen you before". And I think: Huh? I never met him as far as I knew. he lives in a city 20 km away from mine. Turns out he's a tool dealer on the biggest bazaar of Europe, De Zwarte Markt (The Black Market), right here in my city. I go there sometimes because there are a couple of stands that sell new and used tools. Now, I didn't remember his face, but he somehow remembered mine from all the thousands of faces he sees there in the weekend. Amazing.

Anyway, we started talking and he asked me if I worked with these tools for a living, and I said no, not really, I just do a job for friends and family sometimes. So he asked me if I could do some jobs for him on his house. Well, new jobs are always welcome.

The drill is really nice. I'm gonna enjoy this baby. It is funny how it even makes a bit of music when you turn it slowly. I get more than a whole octave of musical notes out of it. Never heard that with a drill.  [laughing] I am a bit surprised at how bulky the battery is. It's almost twice the size of my old 12v DeWalt batteries. Weighs less though. The drill also feels very solid and sturdy.

Haven't had the change though to try it out yet for real. That'll be for tomorrow.

One thing I noticed about the centrotec bits that were included, when they are inserted, there's about a millimeter play, I can move them in and out. Is that normal? Can't say I'm so thrilled about that, would have preferred it if it fitted in rock solid.

Wow I think your green kool-aid is spiked with something 100 proof, a drill that makes music?  I've heard it all now.  Enjoy your new stereo, errr drill.

Alex,

Hate to break it to you.  If you want 7.1 surround sound, you can't get it with Festool drills.  Buy 7 and you'll be close.  [thumbs up]  It might be less expensive in that case to buy a receiver - even a B & O.  You'll have to work on that .1 somehow.

Congrats.  Hope you enjoy it.

Peter

Wow, resonant frequencies out of a drill, now I've heard it all.  8)

Just got a new receiver, an Onkyo NR1007 with 11.1 surround. Yep, 11 speakers plus subwoofers. It's still driving a set of 5.1 surround speakers (and will be for a while).

Congratulations on your purchase!

Since Festool seems to have brought out a musical drill(!), perhaps they'll produce a musical charger to go with it? However they wouldn't the first to do so - Makita's DC18RA charger has a repertoire of 4 or 5 tunes to tell you that the battery is charged! The user can choose which tune his charger should play, so that on a worksite where multiple chargers are being used, he can listen out for his own charger's tune, just like a mobile phone's ringtone!

The same happens with the Centrotec bits in my C12. I've just checked it with a dial indicator, and on my 3-year old C12 with a new Centrotec chuck and a new Centrotec magnetic bit long extension, there is 0.6mm fore and aft movement.

Alex, you can get all of this...

http://www.amazon.com/Makita-LXT702-18-Volt-Lithium-Ion-Cordless/dp/B001DNNT9W/ref=br_fq_5?pf_rd_p=484657931&pf_rd_s=center-4&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=228375&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=15JJTQXP4NA5JNJSSZ5N

for the same price.  Well that's here in the states but you get my point.  I have the Makita 10.8 combo very nice tool.  The Festool drill may be the best drill but it's not worth that much cash.  Drills don't have very many functions...they drill holes and run in screws.  It costs more than the TS 55 for goodness sake. ???

I got this Makita kit the combo is the worst drill i;ve ever had ,replaced it twice , once under warranty once on my own, 3rd gear went both times, and a battery packed in just out of warranty , so i got a T15+3 its the best thing i did
