The better half tells me she does not like our dinning room table & that she would like a new one.  There is no way i am going to buy another one so it has to be made.  I will have a go at most things but am not much of a designer, so this is where i need everybodys help.
Any good ideas, pictures, links to a particular web page etc would be much appreciated.

The table in question should be rectangular, be able to seat 6, hardwood & kinda contemporary.

When i finalise a design i will do a WIP in members projects.

Thanks in advance, Woodguy.

Don't know if this helps much but I suck at design too and this is where I get my ideas from. Huge variety.

Go to Google, click on the "Images" tab,  then type in "Dining Table".  I got 11,200,000 images a few moments ago.  Obviously these are pictures from furniture manufacturers, sales companies, etc.

That will keep her busy for a while!

Stating the obvious im sure woodguy knows about google.  I think hes just asking for people opinions of nice designs and ideas and link him or even have picture of furniture they have made them selfs. Properly also just a friendly chat about ideas I dont know.

Hey Woodguy, I reckon your starting point is "What don't you like about our table, dear?"
Get shot of the negative aspects and you can work on a positive design.

Colour.
Shape.
Thickness.
Ornamentation. (Moldings to table edge, legs and aprons)
Full size to suit 6 or expandable to suit 6?
You will need to look at it in relation to your house design and decor, these may even inspire your design.

And, "how many Festool points will I get for making the perfect table ,dear?"  ;D

Keep us posted, throw out some of your ideas and see what others have to say about them, we will be kind. [wink]

Well, we are off to a promissing start.  I could search Google all night but as JMB says it is more if anyone else has done this or seen something a bit different or nice.  Rob, with regards to matching in with other furniture then that is not an issue as i plan to change most things & will certainly be making new chairs for this table.  The one we have just now is out of Next & whilst it served its purpose for a few years it was quite cheap.  When you just finish building a new 200m sq house & 72m sq workshop there is not a lot of money left for fancy furniture.  I always intended to make my own furniture anyway, just cant seem to get the time.

JMB, you are on the right tracks.  I like the second link you posted.  The one with the square pedestal leg.  I like dark timbers like black walnut & i want it to be full sized (not expandable) & no mouldings.  I like a lot of Eiji Fullers stuff.

Thanks everyone so far, i am sure there will be more cool ideas to come.

If you like modern furniture, Chaplins in London has some nice designs. I think a few of these are very "copyable." Personally, if you are going with a dark wood like walnut, you need to lighten it up somehow or it will look too boxy and heavy. Either introduce a lighter wood such as with an inlay, or add a glass top, or add some curves and tapers.

Interesting project Woodguy.

I am a great lover of the Arts and Crafts movement. I like the simplicity of it and that the main emphasis is on the natural beauty of the wood and the craftsmanship of the construction.
Scotland has a great tradition in furniture design and its own strand of Arts and Crafts Have a look at the work of "The Four" The most famous of the group is Macintosh. He is not everybodies cup of tea but the work of the others, Herbert Macnair, Margret and Frances Mac Donald, may give some inspiration. Also because you said you liked a contemporary feel to the piece. The Scottish movement had close ties with the European movement, ( The Brits fell out with the Scots, nothing new there then.  They accused Macintosh of plagiarism amongst other things even though his designs and ideas were original. Bit of jealousy, nothing good came out of anybody north of Watford , so a Scot was defiantly dammed and the anti Christ.) This close working relationship with the European movement lead to exchange of influences with some of the leading Scottish and European designers and design houses, The most notable being Bauhaus and Henry Van De Velde to name but a few. This gave some of the Scottish designs a very European look that is even quite contemporary today.

Do a bit of research its interesting stuff even if it is not inspirational for this project.

If your going to make the chairs as well your going to have to get the toy out of its crate.
