The new RO 90 DX multi-mode sander --- What are your questions?

Shane,

I'm on board with whatever Festool thinks is most useful. I really like to have the ability to try different offerings without buying a large quantity of any one thing in particular. When I bought my ets 125 several years ago, I received a small sample assortment. Just the other day I was on a job and only had that sander with me, but needed to do some fairly heavy grinding. Since I don't usually use this sander for anything but finish work, I was happily surprised to find a couple sheets of very aggressive paper (don't remember exactly what it was) in the sample pack. It was just enough to finish the job, and I didn't need to go back to the shop for a different sander. In other words, sometimes I find myself needing something I didn't even know I was going to need.
After I had the chance to use this sander in Lebanon, I immediately saw a use for it in my work. Can't wait to get it!

Sign me up for the accessory pack! Would love sample packs of all grits in a series - 5 or 10 per pack. Would also vote with Roger for it to include or be available as a multipad package.

I plan to purchase the RO 90 when it arrives, and would definitely go for the 8+8 abrasives systainer.

Add me in to a Systainer full of sand paper. Ether option is OK.

I found it very convenient to get a systainer/3 full of sand paper when I bought the 150mm sanders. Had a hard time finding it as it was a promo item and only available while quantity lasted.

Having never owned a Rotex or any Festool sander for that matter, I would definitely like to see an abrasives package offered.  It would allow a newb like myself a chance to try out the different types of abrasives so that I would know which ones I would then use the most going forward.  The more selection, the better.

Just for clarification, the RO 90 (as with all Rotex models) will come with a sample pack of abrasives. Usually 1 or 2 sheets of all of the various types to let you try them out. So, even if the abrasive assortment systainer only comes with 2 or 3 different types, you'll still have a sample pack with a little bit of everything we offer.

I don't have a list of what's in that sample pack right off hand unfortunately.

Edit: Here's what the abrasive sample pack will likely include:

Round
(1) Vlies 100
(1) Vlies 800
(3) Granat 40
(5) Granat 60
(5) Granat 80
(5) Granat 120
(5) Granat 220

Delta
(5) Saphir 40
(5) Granat 60
(5) Granat 80
(5) Granat 120
(5) Granat 220

Shane, thanks for sharing that the RO 90 DX will include a sample pack of abrasives.

Reading the expected list brings up a few questions:

Is Brilliant 2 being replaced by Granat?

Does the inclusion of Granat mean that it will not be a problem for various wood finishes? Or did I not understand a post about Granat having been developed for the auto finishing industry and testing on wood still being conducted?

When Granat arrives in the USA, will Platin 2 and Titan 2 still be available? What about Cristal?

Granat will be available in the Delta style as well as round?

Lot of questions there, Carroll. Let's see if I can field them all...

Granat will not replace any of the other abrasive types, nor are there plans to my knowledge of any of the types being removed from the line up.

Granat will be available for the Deltex / RO 90 in grits ranging from 40 to 400.

I don't have any information to share with regard to using Granat in combination with various finishing method and what effect it may or may not have. I hope to have that to share prior to the launch.

Thanks for the fresh information, Shane.

Several of my friends in Europe have started using Granat. All that have tried it like the results and believe the slightly higher purchase price is more than justified by prolonged use. That saves in abrasives cost and also in time not wasted changing paper. These friends use all the normal wood finishes.

Of course I have a large inventory of Brilliant 2, with no plans to let it go to waste!

But since we have no 90mm abrasives on hand, it well could be we will order Granat in that size, and might reduce future orders of Brilliant 2 and Cristal.

Only experience will teach us about that. Probably I was using different abrasives before I bought Brilliant 2.

How about this... Anyone who's interested in the RO 90 and would like to see an abrasives systainer with an assortment of abrasives, post and let me know. I can use this to gauge interest and hopefully make the argument that something like this should be offered as an intro special. [big grin]

Yes Shane, I am interested.  I have abrasive/pad systainers for three of my four Festool sanders and I find them to be quite handy.

Another vote for the 8+8.

But I question why these kind of accessory kits are offered as a promo rather than being available all the time -- especially for these tools with a lot of accessories and/or consumables...  So, when promo items are successful, how about making them regular items?  Wouldn't these kits be just as desirable to those that purchase the tool later as those who purchase during the promo period?

The 8+8 option seems very popular, I'm going against the grain, I like 7+9 or maybe even 9+7..... [poke]  Just kidding Shane, thanks for being so receptive to our ideas, you rock! [thumbs up]

BTW, that's one sweet abrasive sample pack with the RO90.

Hi, Shane.  Are you saying that the sample pack will likely include these only, and no others, or will include these along with others yet to be decided?  I ask because I noticed there's no 150 or 180 grit abrasives on your list.

I'm most interested in an 8 + 8 assortment of abrasives that can be used on wood that will be finished with a common finish such as shellac, lacquer or oil- or latex-based paint.

Regards,

John

John, we have a few units of the RO 90 that we got from Germany for training and evaluation purposes. I pulled a brand new one from our inventory today and checked out the sample packs and that's what they contained. While it's possible that the sample pack has changed since we got these, it's more likely that it's going to be identical to what I listed. I probably can't verify until we receive our first shipment.

I think that ALL the sanders should have an appropriate accessory kit (available not just as a promo). So yes I would want one here as well.

I am in agreement about an abrasive systainer and also a couple of spots for extra pads.

Personally, I'd like to see more abrasive systainers along with an accessry systainer for the OF 1400, of 1010, etc
