Thinking about a Kapex

Hello FOG,

I've been thinking about a Kapex for a while now and have been thinking about how to support it.  Other than the obvious (the wheels), what should I be considering in trying to decide between putting it on the UG stand or the MFT/Kapex?  I'm a hobbyist and it will predominantly be used in a home shop.

Thanks in advance,

Andy

While I don't yet have a Kapex. I do want to purchase one eventually. The mini MFT table is nice as you have space to set down tool and other items while cutting and doing adjustments. The Mobile stand has the benefit of being easy to move around and for me I would choose the mobile stand so when not in use I could fold it up and store it using less shop space.

Wouldn't any table/station do the job for a Kapex, instead of spending extra on an MFT style table?

I purchased the UG stand with extensions and really liked it for mobile use.  Since my Kapex spends most its time in my benchtop miter station, I ultimately sold the UG and just use a couple sawhorses for mobile use ... the UG/extensions were just taking up storage space.

I just need that kind of bench space!

If I get rid of my full-size lathe, I will be able to have a set-up similar to yours. But a lathe sometimes is the right tool for a job....Sigh!

I use the mobile aspect of the UG table only occasionally, but when I need it, it’s amazing! My shop space is chopped up into 3 areas. I really need to move equipment around so every machine except for the big lathe is on wheels. The UG stand is well made and I have a Festool vac nestled under it.

When you buy the Kapex, buy the shortened large diameter hose. It greatly improves the dust removal.

Tips:

Let the blade come to a complete stop before lifting the head.this virtually eliminates throwing cutoffs around. Look for a tiny Allen wrench in the packaging. You need it to adjust the lasers. Read the Supplemental Manual. Reread the Supplemental Manual.

If you are not going to take it out of the workshop then I go with ChuckM's opinion while also going partly with petersd ideas

I also don't have a Kapex as the cost benefit didn't work for me. I needed a mitre saw and was packing into an extremely small space, so took an idea from Paul Marcel and built this

I have the stand and wings, and love it.  I fold it and store it under a countertop in my shop between two base cabinets, and keep the wings on one of my wood rack shelves.  I can have it set up in about 3 minutes, including connecting it to the dedicated small shop vac and cyclone I use with it.  I can take it anywhere easily in my Avalanche, or work with it outside depending on the house project.  The flexibility is great, and the support for the wings is good too, even for long stock.  I highly recommend the UG stand and wings.

If you ever anticipate having projects where you will take the saw to the project the UG cart and extensions are unbeatable.  They also work very well in a stationary shop environment but the cost is a bit steep for just that.

I have this same setup and it works great in my small shop.

I work all over the place, in apartment buildings, large houses, big back yards, little backyards, and the ug cart and wings are the absolute best part of the kapex. Makes it a treat to use. The price seems ridiculous when you get it, but it really has no equal.

This remark applies to the saw itself as well, for some of us. :P

I have the saw and the UG stand set up in the garage.  I have not taken it out.  However, it is nice to break down and fold up when all my projects are complete and I want to park our cars back in the garage.

In Canada we have a store called Canadian Tire and I got this Mastercraft stand similar to the UG thing.  You're on your own with extension wings but I like it.  $59.
I'm pretty sure amazon would show clones under different names, same product.

[member=11933]ScoFF[/member]  That looks like a nice stand.  Do you have an item number or link?  I searched the Canadian Tire website and couldn't find it there or anything similar elsewhere.

Thanks, Mike A.

Nice thing I found out with the kapex 120 UG. In transport position the height is the same with festool tables. You can use it as support.
