I recieved my TS55 earlier this week, I got the chance to use it today and have a concern.
Every time I start the saw the bearings seem noisey. Now I do not have anything to compare to but it just does not sound right.

Any thoughts?

Thanks
Pete

Don't be concerned.  The TS55 makes a noise that you need to get used to.  If you go to Brice's website he even has a video - really an audio - of the noise.  I hope you  enjoy your new tool!

That sound isn't the bearings - it is the soft start of the motor.

It's a little disconcerting since most Festools are really quiet, but in this case it's normal.

Thanks Guys,

TJ, I see you are in the Metro area also, where have you found to have the largest selection of IN stock Festool products? 7 Corners?

Thanks
Pete

Definitely 7 Corners hardware in St. Paul. They don't have everything out on display, but they have a pretty good selection in stock. All of the guys there are straight shooters and really helpful.

When I got my 1st TS55 it made that noise and I was convinced there was something wrong with it.
It got stolen, insurance bought me a new one ... and the new one sounded exactly the same.
Eventually I found an explanation.
The TS55 has a clever device that is constantly ensuring that the blade speed is constant under any load.
The gear operation used to constantly adjust the torque to keep the speed constant leads to that noise.

That's right, it's the MMC electronics turning the motor on and off rapidly, the sound is the backlash in the gears constantly engaging and disengaging.  It's perfectly normal.

I suppose this has something vaguely in common with how ABS brakes work.
And they also make an annoying and worrying noise when they kick in.

Thanks All,
That is exactly how it sounds.

I was just at 7 Corners Thursday, picked up some clamps and another 55" rail.

Thanks

Tsk Tsk, TJ. You know that's not the largest display you've seen.  [big grin]

That's a true statement!  That being said, you're not much of a dealer - more of a "neener neener look at all the awesome stuff you'll never be able to buy in NA-er."  [tongue]

Let's make a deal - how about I can come use your Vac-Sys and all your other cool tools I don't have and you can come use my Bridgeport - probably the only tool I have that you don't.
Used your MGS-20 again yesterday.

Hey, what's the point in having toys tools if you can't say, "nah nah na NAINA" every once in a while?  [big grin]

I love 7 Corners too. I bought a couple of lavaliere (lapel) microphones on Craig's List a few months ago, and discovered that the seller was a closet-woodworker and had never been to 7 corners before. So we decided to meet there for the sale and a walk-through. I spent over an hour showing this guy around the store and the cool tools on display, and had some good laughs with my favorite salesman, Pat, along the way. Obviously I am not the typical customer, but I love that they know me by name when I reach the top of the steps (and more importantly that they freely admit that my display of Festools is bigger than theirs  [tongue]).

Even though all of the doors have signs saying "photography is strictly prohibited" I kind of get a kick out of the fact that I can even get store personnel to snap my pictures for me. (This is me and the FOG user "Hasslefactor").

By the way, glad to hear you are still happy with your MGS-20.  [thumbs up]

Uh, I should point out that this photo was when Rick was younger and still had his girlish figure.   [tongue]

[birthday song]

Rick, your're not wearing your dress in those pictures!? :o

Pat and Tim know me by name too - I haven't decided if that's a good thing or a bad thing yet. [unsure]

Next time you're heading over there, let me know and I'll buy Cossettas.
