TS 75 Hack?

Hi all hoping you can shed some light... I jut bought a TS 75 and was told at the FS roadshow it could rip 2.88” with the track 3” without... get it back to the shop and it can only do 2.75” I was thinking about trimming down the depth stop .125 - .188 to get the extra depth. Has anyone done this? Based on the design of this saw it looks like it can be done. Anybody have any thoughts on this??

My thoughts on this are you should not fool around with a tool as dangerous as a circular saw beyond factory specifications.

But how is it possible you don't get the 3'' - 75 mm depth? It is named TS75 for that reason.

Better contact Festool.

Possiby the depth stop isn't set to full depth? I would look at that and also check if the fine adjust isn't set to an extreme.

Also keep in mind that 75mm are only 2,95276" , not an even 3".

I just measured my TS75 and it plunges to a depth of 75mm off the track and 70mm on the track with a genuine Festool blade fitted.....

As Gregor suggested, check all the settings on your saw...!!!

Whoever told you 2.88" on the rail out of the box was incorrect, at least according to the Festool website. Cutting specifications for TS 75 copy/pasted from Festool website:

Cutting Depth on Guide Rail: 2 3/4" (70 mm) straight down and 2 1/8" (55 mm) at 45°
Cutting Depth without Guide Rail: 2 15/16" (75 mm) straight down

Thank you all for the feedback, I bought the saw new (yesterday) and it does cut to the exact specs of what the literature says it does not what I was told. My dilemma is that I need 2.88” depth while using the track... I will study this further and let you know what I do. Stay tuned...

Welcome to the forum!  [smile]

Sounds like whoever confirmed the depth that you said you need didn't do their math right.

You've  got the 30 day return window , but I don't think that will apply if you modify the saw.

Can you cut from both sides?

Seth

I did do that and there was a slight kerf that created a bigger gap then I had wanted. I do a lot of beam and thicker slab glue ups. Is there another track saw out there that has a greater depth and the same precision? I’m open to suggestions

The Mafell KSS 80, though it is a bit more expensive. A cutting depth of 3 3/16".

If you don't care about a warranty (or perhaps you have someone in the old country that can act as your silent proxy should a warranty issue ever come up?) importing the 110V version will save you several hundred dollars:

Personally, I wouldn't give Timberwolf tools the time of day, let alone almost $2000.

Another much more random and complicated option (I don't know your specific situation and/or willingness/ability to pursue and/or stomach all the possibilities and accept the various potential liabilities) might have you looking into getting ahold of a used Festool track saw with larger capacity.

Used Tools

In the past, Festool sold the "AP 88" and the "AP 85", though never, to my knowledge, in N.A.

Here's an AP 85E for sale on eBay.de:

An 88E sold on eBay.de back in May:

Often sellers are willing to ship internationally.

Of course, these are likely 50hz machines running on 230V (or thereabouts) so you'd need to run a dedicated 240V line (if you don't have one already) to where ever you plan to process the material and accept the slightly higher motor speed that comes from running a 50Hz machine on 60Hz. Alternatively, you could buy a voltage transformer (I think some will even adjust the Hz output). I think you'd still be way ahead of $2000 for a new Mafell. Parts are still available for these machines too. You could even pick up two and have one for parts.

If these machines are not your cup of tea and/or compatible with current Festool guide rails (I'm not positive they are) then you can disregard my idea. Someone is sure to pipe in with some personal knowledge of these machines. If not, you could create a new post and ask your questions.

Brand New

Or, if you have 240V readily available (and all the other aforementioned considerations met/resolved), you could go grey market (and I'm not advocating you do this) and acquire your very own HK85 and be the envy of all of us North Americans here on the FOG:

Festool makes a HK85 with 85mm cut depth (52mm on 45°), can also take a trench head to make 16-25mm wide goves up to 32mm in depth. Works with the FS and FSK rails. ~570€ for the base model.

Then there is the HK 132 with 132mm cut depth (85mm on 45°), dosn't work with the FS rails though and is ~1.6k€ for the base model. Listed onhttps://www.festoolusa.com/company/segments/carpentry in the 'Roof construction' section as 'HK 132 E portable circular saw' (matching description, it's quite a monster) - but that link is dead.

I just ordered an HK 85! It will work perfect for what I need. Thank you all for the advise!

Keep a TS55R for cutting sheet goods. If you need bigger, the HK 85 is very nice. It cuts 10mm deeper and is cheaper than the TS 75.

The AP85 was much heavier. AP 85 EB was 8.9 kg, the HK 85 only 7.0. Te TS saws got the magnesium foot years earlier. Although for the AP 85 they made an insert for the CMS, not for the HK 85  [unsure]

I can pick up an HK 85 new in systainer with the FSK 420 rail for, converted and excluding VAT, at my local dealer, for $760. So what exactly does that red thing offer for the next $1000???

Oh wait of course... the HK 85 is NAINA  [eek] [huh]
