"TSO Products Presents the Next Generation Guide Rail Square"

I like the idea of a user-to-user shipping, high quality upgrade template.
It would also allow for some „get to know your fellow tool-heads“ on a regional basis. :)

Should include a tap guide for those not familiar with using taps. Maybe a hand counter sink for after drilling the holes. Makes leading the tap in easier.

Tom

Tom, you're right about other common lubes like kersosene, WD-40, etc. I was trying to find something that works without making a mess in a wood shop environment.
Previously I think I used LPS brand TAPMATIC EdgeLube comes as a solid, waxy 13 oz bar in a paper cartridge -  a bit bulky to be shipping around but safe handling in parcels. I just dragged the tap through it to apply.

the suggestion to countersink the tap-drilled hole BEFORE tapping is spot on! - thanks
Next will be figuring out how to keep the loaner kits from getting "lost" - probably require a credit card to hold until it has been forwarded to the next recipient. Probably takes more effort to figure that out along with the system of connecting the recipients than to design the fixture. Maybe we'll try it on a very small scale sample and see if it requires anything other than a "bucket brigade" list and the honor system.

Hey Hans,
How about including a small bottle of AlumTap as others may not have this on hand.
http://www.tapfree.com/alumtap.html
[member=44099]Cheese[/member]  - I was thinking about that before I sent off my previous post but figured if I went that far then somebody would suggest including shop towels, too  [wink]

Seriously now: given the sticky nature of aluminum something is needed. I'm trying to remember the brand of a "lube-stick" type of product I used before on a rework project where liquid was not a good option. The lube stick type of product would also be easier/safer to ship without leaking.

Perhaps one of the members can offer a lube stick product suggestion we could include.

Hans

For a couple of holes Chapstick will be sufficient.

My favorite aluminum cutting lube is Boelube liquid but they also have a stick form.

Hans said, "We thought about an exchange program too, to eliminate the turn around time. The small number of tools involved make this approach less feasible, too."

Seems like a small number of tools would make an exchange program more feasible...

Boelube Stick looks promising in the small form factor for shipping along in the kit.
I'll check that out.
Thanks Michael K.

- so, one idea would involve complete sets containing :
CNC machined aluminum jigs with hardened drill bushings,
M6 tap drill
M6 Tap
Tap handle
Countersink
Re-usable shipping container

There is also this. Works great in a cordless drill when a drill bushing is the guide

Michael have you tried the stick form? If so, you’re thoughts?

I assume these are the same people that make Boeshield.

I bought the stick form in case I was working in a clean environment but haven't needed it yet.

I transfer the regular liquid Boelube to this bottle. Works a lot better than the stock container.

I've been tapping aluminum up  to 3/4" for 37 years...WD-40.  I used to buy the drill/tap combo bits but above 3/16" material thickness, they break far too easily.  I use Big Gator drill and tap guides now.

a very good start on the field upgrade kit for adding the precision accessory attachment hole pattern to earllier GRS-16 and GRS-16 PE.
We'll concentrate our resources on bringing out more accessories so the mounting holes really mean something. The Field Upgrade Kit will be worked on as time permits. Any progress will be reported in your TSO INSIDER newsletter.

thanks for all the input!

I'll check that out.

Hans, I just received this yesterday from MSC.  Tap-Ease for aluminum in stick form.  Available individually at $2.80 per stick. MSC also carries Boelube in stick form, however you need to order a 30-piece minimum. I'd still like to try some Boelube.  [big grin]

[member=44099]Cheese[/member]  - good suggestions, Nick. I'll send you samples and let you pass judgement for the intended purpose. If you want to volunteer to create a fixture concept (or a CAD model if you can generate a DXF) it will speed up our ability to get the drill jigs designed and eventually available.

Hans,
I can generate a DXF file, however it's only in 2D...remember I'm really, really old school. [big grin]

I'll settle for a pencil sketch from you  [wink]

Hans,

Have you guys ever thought about making a systainer foam inset for the triangle system components to be safely stored in as systainer box?

Are there any plans to make 6 and 12 inch triangle for squaring up smaller projects, miter saws, and table saws?

Woodpeckers only gives you 15 -21 days to order their triangles and they always put them on sale between pay periods.  You never get any advanced warning or chance to budget for a Woodpecker triangle when they pop-up out of the blue.

They don’t make it easy to order their one time Tools.

[member=66154]Steven Owen[/member]  - YES, we have a foam insert for the MTR-18 Triangle accessories in the works. It definitely needed.
Our concept envisions a FoamPac which densely gathers the MTR-18 accessories in a nested foam pad in such a way that the customer has unused space he/she can customize for the addition of other accessories which may - or may not - necessarily go with the MTR-18 but still are used with Festool tools and accessories. For example the Triangle Accessory FoamPac will include provision for storing the new 15 inch Angle which can be used on a variety of TSO tools but which is not part of the standard MTR-18 accessory kit. There will be unused space for customers to carve out nests for some Dogs for example.

Now I already know the next question: " how soon can I get it?"

With November at our doorstep we will aim to be able to begin shipping before the end of December.

Smaller Triangles: YES, we're quite receptive if we can see some further expressions of interest - anyone else interested?

Small triangle. Yes please. I'd rather buy TSO than Woodpeckers. I like the blue and you guys better.

EDIT> Fixed quote box.
