updating my shop.....AGAIN!

Dick,

My Kapex station is something I slammed together on a Saturday with out much thought.  I received the Kapex on a Thursday (I think) and that weekend I wanted to give it a home.

My plan was to have systainers on both sides.  Then I wanted to put my bench top machines inside a cabinet.  Then my  systainer collection double, then tripled with in a couple months.  I quickly ran out of systainer storage.  When I built this station I was still trying to map out my shop.  This for me was a temporary fix for storage needs.

If you have a similar need then it works just fine.  The reason I want the UG set is because it's a smaller foot print.  Mobile, I have a deck and shed to build next spring and I know I'll be using the Kapex for the builds and want a easy way to haul it back and forth from the garage to the back yard.
And I have heard good things about the UG set as well.  Not to mention it goes with this Festool theme I have going on  [wink]

I have the Kreg fence with stops that slide on both sides of the Kapex.  I used 5/16" knobs and threaded inserts in the top of the bench.  So if I need to remove them I can.

Here are some pics for you....

Don't get me wrong.  This set up works great and could work great for someone else.  So if you have a vision for your Kapex station then go with it!

Eric

That is a very good layout. I am just curious.. where did you hide the unisaw.   [tongue]

What kind of legs did you use on the cabinets next to the Kapex?

Cheers

Shawn,

The legs are Ikea Akurum legs.  The same legs I used in my LR32 videos.

erock,

LOVE your shop, layout etc.

I also really appreciate your YouTube videos.  They are awesome and partially responsible for many of my recent purchases!!!

erock,

This looks great, and I'd eventually start working on a similar setup to store the sustainers that are starting to pile up  [smile].  I too have to put a vehicle in my garage and therefore need to keep things against the wall and portable.

A noobie question... but can I ask what you do/use to shape stock?  ie. jointing, planing, etc?  Or even needed based on what you are making?

Eric,

Two things;

1) what is a car doing in your shop?  The last time a car came into my shop my wife drove over a gallon can of paint that splattered over everything.

2) what are you doing with a hollow chisel mortiser when you have a Domino?

Nice shop [wink]

Jack

Great setup Eric.  Every time i see how close to wall a Kapex sits, works and no dust shroud behind, i go into convulsions.  Your setup works, but i can understand why you want he UG set if you are going outside in the spring.

Wow guys….I forgot all about this thread.  This is a little blast from the past.

I think I bought the Kapex UG set a month or so after I did my little remodel.

Tom Bellemare would have to look at his records to confirm that.  [wink]

@ grasshopper……Thank you very much for the kind words.

@ thumbsmasher…….I buy my lumber from a local lumber yard that planes and sands the lumber to the thickness I want.  I don't want to waste much time having to mill the lumber to the thickness I want.  I use my TS55 to get the lumber to the width I want.  I do own a Dewalt thickness planer, but don't use it much.  And my jointer needs a new motor.  But I have a HL850 and the bench unit if I need to clean up a edge.  But using the TS55 leaves a glue ready edge, I hardly use the HL850.

@ jacko9…… 1) happy wife, happy life.    2) The hollow chisel mortiser was in the shop before I bought the Domino.  The last time I used it was to build a few shutters to match someones existing shutters.  So having it laying around the shop comes in handy ever once in a while.  I won't get rid of it, someday will come and I'll need it for a special project.  Like the shutters I build.  The person I built them for wanted them to match the existing shutters exactly.

@ Tinker….Thanks buddy.  I'm really happy that I bought the UG set.  Since I bought it, the Kapex station that is pictured above is gone.  Giving me more space in the shop.  And I've had to take the Kapex over to some friends/family's homes a couple times so it was great to fold and load up the Kapex with the UG set.

Now, I'm waiting for the darn concrete contractor to get his butt over to my house and start the foundation work on my new shop.

I'm putting a 26 X 26 shop in my backyard.  I've been planning this project for a long time now, but life has been getting in the way.
Plus the WIFE wanted a pool installed this past summer….again, happy wife = happy life.  So my shop was put on hold for sometime.
So if all goes well, the concrete crew will be in in a few weeks.  And I'll start building the new shop next spring, unless the weather permits me to build before the snow starts falling.  I'm building my shop out of 2 X 8 metal studs….so they will be very cold to handle once the weather gets bad around here.

Eric

Hi Eric,
awesome news on your new shop I hope its the start to your new fetool video series  [poke]. IM sure im not the only who been wondering what you been up to on Utube and you going to make me buy next from festool  [poke]. I started using the LR 32 set for my garage remodel, its going slow as I cant give my full attention but its sweet due to your training and how to video for reference if I need it.

Cheers

Nice Eric,
My dad always said that a  garage was not intended for a car,but I like your answer . Happy wife and all.
Nice festool collection btw.
Chuck

Eric,

Im a little late to this party..

But that shop of yours is entirely to clean, Ya need to go a dust it up a bit

Just sat down for a meal break and read this whole thread. Nice re-do. I particularly like your Sys-Wall.

And I agree that it's WAY too clean. Even with Festool there should be SOME sawdust there or people will think you never use it?

Sometimes it's crazy how things work out.    Just a couple days ago, my wife asked me if Jon (the concrete contractor) is going to have the concrete done this year.  I was loosing hope that the concrete would be poured this year.

It would have been done back in August.  BUT !    Someone......THE WIFE......wanted a pool.  Okay, and I wanted one as well, so I won't put all the blame on her.    Since we decided to have a pool installed I had to contact Jon and  reschedule with him.
He's a busy guy, great at what he does.  And I knew I would be pushed back quite a bit.  No worries.  Wife is happy with the pool and so am I so it was worth putting this project off for a while.    The overall dimensions of the pool is 36 feet long X 20 feet wide.  It's a Kayak pool, so it has aluminum decking all around it.  The actual swimming pool is 26 feet long X 16 feet wide.  I had the installers recess the pool by 2 feet.  It's 4 feet deep.  So half the pool in ground, half above ground.  With the deck on the pool it gives us more privacy from the neighbors.  We have a 6 foot privacy fence, and even when I'm walking around on the deck cleaning the pool, you can see above the fence.  But when people are swimming, no one can see inside the pool from the street.  If that makes sense?

So just yesterday Jon called me !!!  [big grin] [big grin] [big grin] [big grin]

He said he's shooting to get over to my place and start working this upcoming Wednesday ( Nov. 19th)

So the concrete WILL GET DONE THIS YEAR !    But I won't start building it until next spring.  I have a big pile of 2 X 8 metal studs laying behind the house now.  The metal trusses are on order and all permits have been pulled.  So next spring, I will have more to report.

And guys !  REALLY?  Sawdust?  Isn't that why we buy Festool?  Because we don't like saw dust?    [tongue]    And my mild case of OCD will not let me have saw dust on the floor.....or anything else.  I'm to much of a neat freak.

Sometimes when using the OF1400 if dust hits the floor I'll stop and clean it up with the vac.    Good thing I'm not trying to make a living with the tools.  I think I spend more time cleaning then actually using the tools and working!    [embarassed]

But I'll post some pics as this project moves along.

Take care,

Eric

Suuuure, Eric. You'll wait until spring, uh huh...

Scott,

He will have to wait until spring, cause you know Eric will be tempted to stick his tongue to those metal studs to see if his tongue sticks like in a Christmas Story!!  So after he realizes it does work, he is going to have to wait until the spring thaw to get his tongue off the studs and get started.  [big grin] [big grin]

Eric,
I'm new to Festool, though I've already bought and used domino 500/ ts55/ mft/ vac/ sanders/ router, etc, etc.
I really enjoy your videos along with those from Peter Parfitt, both of you have a great knack of
highlighting the important points and make learning far from tedious.
It's very interesting to see where you work, thanks for sharing your ideas.
Cheers and all the best
Tony
