Using LR 32 rail and system on a non 32 cabinet

Is it possible to use the LR 32 system on a non 32 project?  I have access to the LR 32 system and I am building a cabinet that is not based on the 32 method.  Can I sue the LR 32 system as a jig to drill shelf holes only and if so will everything be accurate?  If this would work is it as simple as moving and squaring the jig?  Am I missing something?

Thanks

It works just fine. Always reference the top edge (or bottom not both) and things will line up.

As Tom said, just be sure to reference the same edge.

At our seminar on Saturday, The Hammer gave a cool tip.  Use colored stickies to mark the reference edge, and the same color to mark the start and stop hole that correspond to that edge.  Use a different color for the other refence and start/stop holes.

If you want, I can upload a pic later.

Hmm... Not sure how you would do it. It will require some creativity. Not only the LR32 rail has indexing holes drilled at 32 mm interval, but it also can only be indexed relatively to the end of your work piece ONLY at the first hole position of 32 mm from the edge or 16 mm from the edge. This is because it has an indexing bar which attaches under the rail. This indexing bar is used to reference the end of the work piece. It has pre-drilled holes for screws for two specific positions, 16 and 32 mm, relatively to the indexing holes. It is not a smoothly adjustable slider.

You may be able to use clamps or spacers to get the indexing you want, but I am not sure how reliable it will be.

Have you considered "Woodpeckers Combination Shelf Pin Drill Template"? It is a much lower cost option which will do its job if all you need is a few holes for shelves.

I use the LR 32 indexing off one reference edge often. No problem with flipping the rail end for end.

The advantages to the LR 32 over other systems is the use of a router and dust collection.

I sure like the idea of different colored stickies.  I had thought about this option while I was trying to recall what are up, down, in and out.  Thanks for the great idea.  A photo of your system would be handy.

I flip the rail and ref the same top edge. When it comes to which holes, i simply do lines from one side and circles from the other side. Some holes will have a line with a circle around it. I also mark a line or circle at the end of the rail to remind myself which holes to use when ref that side of the rail.

I do it all the time. I use different coloured dry erase markers to mark start and stop points.

Ken,
I would like to see a pick.

Thanks.

I'm traveling at the moment, but will be back home late next week.  I'll upload pictures for you all then.
