Veritas Parf Dogs from Lee Valley - The Video

Thanks for the interest Ron. I will be creating a couple of videos, one under the 'mobilisation of the workshop' to do with putting benches etc on castors and a second video about a new layout of holes on a bench to match the capabilities of the Parf Dogs.

I have the bench on some industrial castors now and just an odd end of MDF loosely on top until I work out the layout of the 20mm holes. In the shot below you can see the general idea. On the other side will be two sets of three drawers. You can also see the two areas where the push-me pull-you drawers will go (they can be pulled from either side).

And when you emailed Lee Valley about this issue, what did they say?

They told me to send it back and put a note saying inspect before ship it. It kinda surprise me when they told me that. I thought a good company would inspect all their products before they ship it out. I bought 8 pieces, and 4 are bad.

I'll bet he wants the note so they are double checked. Those are either dents from a batch being dropped or they are imperfections that were in the bar stock. LV may be using one inch stock and are only taking .016" off the diameter. I've seen these type of imperfections in stainless bar fairly often. The way a bar machine would pop these out it is not that surprising they weren't spotted. LV is standing behind them, that's what counts.

I was actually surprised they went with 25mm, assuming as Greg did that they'd start with 1" stock there is little excess material to remove to end up with a clean surface. 24mm would have given them a little more to work with.

I didn't go back in the thread to confirm the one inch material. That is a supposition on my part. Another supposition, based on the first one and the problem we are discussing, will be that Rob tightens up the inspection process to weed out defects in the bar that don't clean up. I;m wiiling to bet a few parts being weeded out will be less costly than using larger stock.

Like most materials stainless can be purchased with different surface preps, including centerless ground. Only Rob can say which way he went. Every operation added is reflected in cost. My guess is he is not using CG, ( I don't think I would) since only a very small lenght of the starting diameter is left in the finished product.

Mostly, this is a non-issue. Only Kevinn has had a problem and Rob will make him whole. Pretty much end of story.

I think you misunderstood what Richard was saying.  I believe he meant that it is harder to get a clean cut and finish when machining 1" stock down to 25mm than it would be to machine down to 24mm.  In other words, it would be easier to get a clean finish by machining down to 24mm rather than 25mm from 1" stock.  Taking more material off would get rid of most nicks and chips that come with the raw stock.

Just in last night from a trip, so have been a bit out of touch.

Sorry to hear of your experience with the dogs - I can assure you that we'll put it right. First thing this morning I had all stock completely re-inspected at both Veritas and Lee Valley. Out of the 1200+ dogs inspected - we found exactly 5 with scratches/nicks, (3 at Veritas, 2 at Lee Valley).

Our director of manufacturing told me: Possible causes - These dogs are very heavy and could be damaged via handling, packaging, shipping and or storage if not careful. Most of the damage seen in both the pictures and during our inspection is on one of the two chamfers. If dropped, this is where the part would make contact with whatever surface that it hits. These are packaged in fairly robust 4mm bag and are heat sealed between each dog to prevent them from hitting one another.

I suspect that the damage you have seen must have been caused in shipping.... so we'll also look at changing our packaging processes.

I have just received an email from Axminster Power Tools who have confirmed what Cliff had said earlier...

They expect to have the Parf Dogs later this week and they will be £17.75 a pair. The stock number is 504543 but it may not be showing up on the web site yet so a telephone order might be easier.

Axminster do ship throughout Europe but I understand that you need to get a shipping rate from them for some destinations.

Bench Dogs are 504542. I did not check the price but they will be cheaper than the Parf Dogs.

I just ordered my dogs this morning from Axminster:

Part No 504543 £17.75 per pair, part no 504542 £13.20 per pair, part no 953482 £1.02 each.

They are not on the website yet but they are accepting phone orders.

Gosh, I did not realise how low the price was for those knobs - I use a lot of that sort of thing in some of my jigs and with my Parf Dogs (of course). I will get a bunch with my next order.
