Veritas Parf Dogs from Lee Valley - The Video

Hi Charlie

Gosh, I did not realise how low the price was for those knobs - I use a lot of that sort of thing in some of my jigs and with my Parf Dogs (of course). I will get a bunch with my next order.

I am still getting used to Axminster's new web site!

Many thanks.

Peter

Hi Peter

I think that Axminister and Rutland's do kits of jig parts .... might be more economical if you use them a lot, provided the size are right!

I have had a couple of PMs here and messages through YouTube about the 'Parf Hats'. Here is a better photograph. They can be made from any hard wood and mine just happen to be 49mm square section. I made mine such that they are the same height as the Parf Dog (70mm). Neither of these dimensions are critical.

After cutting the blanks I marked an approximate centre on one end and drilled a 26mm hole 10mm deep with a Forstner bit. I then counter bored with a 20 mm Forstner the rest of the way through. The 20mm drilling is a nice fit but the 26 mm bore is to guarantee clearance for the 25mm boss. You can substitute a 1" cutter instead of the 26mm one but you would need to experiment to get a good equivalent for the 20mm bit.

Most of the time there is no need to anchor them from underneath but if you were doing a hundred or more operations on a stack of wood then it might be worth putting the 8mm screw knob in from underneath.

I made an error in my previous post and have corrected the figure for the clearance for the boss - it is shown in red.

Just ordered a set of parf dogs and a set of the low profile dogs, from Axminster. Price is really good, i was tempted with the earlier version when i came across them, but was put off at the price for a complete set. They are now far cheaper than the originals and made from stainless steel along with the veritas branding and manufacturing quality. Well done Peter and veritas.

That is really kind but it is Rob Lee at Lee Valley who had the vision to take on the Parf Dogs and make them work the way that I originally envisaged. To get the Veritas stamp of approval is pure icing on the cake.

So I brought my first mft table about a week ago from my local Axminster store. And while there looked at these dogs but didn't buy them. After a day playing around with the mft and watching this video I decided to pop back to Axminster to buy both sets of dogs only to find they sold the last ones the day before!  [sad]

Axminster are saying these are out of stock till about the 13th February online and In store.

Can I buy these anywhere else? Or am I going to have to play the waiting game?

Hi Jimmy

I see that Brimarc sell these and so I have just phoned the nearest Brimarc stockist to Oxford only to find that they have none left in stock and would have to order them from Brimarc. As Brimarc and Axminster share their warehouse they too will be out of stock. I am afraid that unless another dealer has Veritas Parf Dogs in stock you will have to wait.

The Veritas Parf Dogs are made of stainless steel, are very competitively priced and far superior to their aluminium predecessors - it will be well worth the short wait.

Thanks for the reply peter.

I should have brought them there and then! That will teach me.

Also I have been watching your videos and find them very helpful and informative. Keep them coming!

Picked up my set of both the short and long Parf dogs from Carbatec in Brisbane Australia yesterday. I was (according to their records) the second Australian customer - the first was in Sydney.

Great product, well manufactured and finished. Will get to use them productively tomorrow

I hope that Kev was the first customer !

Many thanks. My bit was easy - it took the foresight and engineering skills of Lee Valley to make sure that these deserved the "Veritas" quality mark. I am so pleased that Rob Lee made the decision to produce them from stainless steel - they will last for ever.

Why aren't small Parf dogs called Parf pups?
There is not a lot of Parf in the small dogs from Veritas  - I think 'Lee Dog' might be more accurate! From a consumer point of view it is a nice idea as the two designs should be bought together. I also think that there should be a recommendation to buy them in fours rather than pairs.

Peter

G'day Untidy Shop, Price in A$ was A$24 for the small pair, and A$27 for the large pair. I priced importing them direct from Lee Valley, but the lowest freight cost option was US $68! So the Carbatec price is good value.

Thanks for that, much less than I was expecting.

Just ordered two pair of each...really looking forward to them.  I like the low profile -- should solve lots of issues with sanding...

I ordered two pairs of the standard height, and a pair of the tall Parf Dogs when Lee Valley had gift cards on sale during the Black Friday / Cyber Monday sale.  I had purchased Qwas Dogs and Rail Dogs when I got my track saw in November, and love them.  But the Parf Dogs looked good, due to the internal threads,  for my plans to make some custom jigs.  When I got them, I was really impressed.  The quality is beyond what I was expecting.  The maching is first rate, and the fit is excellent. I milled my 20mm holes to be a glove fit to the Qwas Dogs, and the Parf Dogs have the same fit.

When I saw that Lee Valley had another free shipping event recently, I used up the rest of my gift card, and my order included more Parf Dogs.

I finally decided to get some mft dogs. Looked at all the different vendors and they all look very nice so it was a tough choice but I decided to try the Parf's.

While I understand making the 'dog' diameter a tiny bit less than 20mm is a necessity I had expected them to have a better fit, aka less horizontal movement when fully inserted. I tried unused holes in my mft3 just in case the most used ones had some wear from the clamps though the slop seems the same.

While it is some what acceptable it will affect the precision if one uses the dogs for setting up the cutting rail.

I'm curious to know how much 'slop' you guys experience with the 'dogs' from the different vendors including Parf ?
