I am building a shop cart from soft maple and have made 2 1/4"x 2 1/4" legs for the cart. In order to attach them to the casters I have made 1" thick 3"x 4" blocks. These are necessary because the plate on the casters is larger than the square post. I am thinking of attaching the vertical post to the base with 2 #10 dominos. I was going to use my RSG self centering guide and mortise the bottom of the legs. Assuming the legs are 56mm x 56mm, I will self center and use the 24mm height setting. This will place the center of the mortise 12mm from the top I use for reference. If I flip the leg 180 degrees and use the same settings, I will two centered mortises, each with a center 12mm from the reference surface. The amount of stock between the two mortises should be 22mm, or 56mm - (12mm + 5mm + 12mm + 5mm) = 22mm. No problem doing the mortises on the bottom of the vertical posts.
I can also use the SCG to center the mortise on the horizontal base, but I would like some advice from those more experienced than me on how to cut the mortise from the end. I can measure and set up a support to align the Domino when held on end. I am concerned the dominos will be slightly off (not align) if I simply use measurements and set up a fence/jig. But I was wondering what best practice is to assure the dominos will align (the 22mm separation in my example above) and how one does this to allow for the greatest accuracy.
Thanks in advance for your help.
