Video Comparison of Domino vs Dowelmax on Simple Joints

Just for giggles, I did a comparison of the Domino and Dowelmax on simple joints.  I did a typical frame joint, and edge joining.  I am not an expert with either tool, and I'm a hobbyist.  My methods may be different than yours, or in some cases just goofy.  However, I think that you'll see, in the case of these simple joints, the Domino is significantly faster than the Dowelmax, but precision and ease is about equal.  The Domino has incredible chip extraction and, of course, the Dowelmax has none.  The Domino, as stated earlier, covers just about every "angle" of wood joinery and having both tools, I'm not exactly sure when I would ever use Dowelmax.  I'll keep it because it's a brilliantly engineered tool and a terrific piece of North American Engineering.  This is another Germany vs. Canada bout and though speed goes to Festool, precision was a tie and cost effectiveness for the hobbyist goest to Dowelmax.  For someone who had time sensitive uses of the tool, the Domino wins.  As for strength of joints, I have no way of testing, and frankly don't care if it takes 2 or 3 grown men to jump on it to have it break.

Errors in the video.  I state that you need to buy the Starter Kit.  You don't, of course.  However, if you want to cut entire variety of joints, you do.  I state that the Domimo comes with no Dominos...well, even though the Dowelmax comes with some Dowels, it comes with about 50 and with a bout 3 - 5 in every joint...well, that means you're buying Dowels too.

I make no reference to specific tool setups as it's just a quick comparison of the two methods just to give someone an idea for comparison purposes.  There is so much good information on Domino and Dowelmax that there wasn't any need to produce an epic video outlining the entire uses of the tool.  Hence the "Simple Joints" angle.

I hope this is useful content.

Motty what a ripper vid.  ;D

Loved the layed back easy going way you presented it. Perfect fot those tossing up between the two. Well done  ;D ;D

Mot, I really enjoyed that.  It was as entertaining as it was educational.  I'll be adapting Dowelmax's indexing rod for use with the Domino.  Thanks!

Regards

John

Thanks guys.  The videos are fun to do as well.  Oh, and John, adapting the indexing rod system to the Domino is a really slick idea.  I hadn't thought of it.

Cheers!

mot,  the videos not working for me....every other one works fine.  I just get a black screen and no sound
