What do the guide rail extensions give you? more width? or cutting on the opposi

I picked up a set of the parrallel guides for my new TS55 and track.
They go up to 650mm width.
What do the extensions give you - is it more width or just the ability to cut on the other side of the rail.
Sorry probably dumb question but I is still learnin das festool.

Good question -

They are used for narrow stock.  You set the guide on the outside of the saw blade for consistent narrow stock cuts from a board.

To elaborate; when working with sheetgoods there is usually no need for a rip capacity greater than 65cm as a standard sheet is 122 or 125. 62,5cm effectively halves that, and you can usually buy half size sheets to begin with. If you would like a greater range you're probably considering crosscuts and for this an accessory like the TSO GRS-16 is great.

Additionally the main reason for doing such cuts is going to be cabinets, which are going to have sides generally in the ~600mm range.  You want to hold them all the same.

You can cut off from the other side to go "wider" but you aren't going to have the precise control on the width of the working peices as the sheet goods are never perfect in form.

Just wanted to know what I was missing.
