What Primer and Paint for Cabinets?

Now that I'm done ranting about my Sherwood KA+ experience I need some advice:

I'd like to start painting cabinets tomorrow and I still need to decide on a primer and topcoat. I intend to use a Fuji Mini-Mite 5 and I'll likely be doing this in my basement unless the weather warms up a lot more than the forecast thinks it will.

Right now the options I see are:

1. ProClassic Waterborne Interior Acrylic Enamel and a primer.
2. DuraLaq. I know nothing about the products, but according to [member=24938]JCLP[/member] they spray well, so I'm willing to give their stuff a try as long as one of the BM stores around here stocks it.
3. Insl-X Cabinet Coat and Stix Primer
4. I might be able to get General Finishes Enduro White Poly but I wouldn't count on it.

What say you? Are there any other options I should consider?

Stix and cab coat are good.

I have not use the SW Emerald Urethane but have read very good things about it.

Don’t use pro classic for Cabinets. If you Use S-W use emerald urathane and extreme bond primer. If Ben Moore use advance and fresh start primer( check with store I think there may be a better primer but advance is the way to go)

I’ve never used it, but for cabinet work I think Duralac is would be the most durable product of the four you listed.

Cabinet Coat is an excellent product, but I’ve never sprayed it with an HVLP.

After a few phone calls I found a local BM reseller who carries DuraLaq Waterborne and has both the undercoat and the white finish in stock. SCORE!

I can't wait to get this project finished!

Duralq Undercoater is my vote. Apply first coat, sand 320 and apply a second coat and sand again with 320. I always put 2 coats of primer. With your Fuji 5, I have the Q5 and I set the power at full. I use a T70 gun with the PPS system and the 1.3mm needle and cap. No thinning.

As for the top coat, I use to use Advance but the drying time and the curing time is nuts. 16 - 20 hours to re-coat and 30+ days to cure. It's great paint if you are brushing/rolling by hand but for spraying it's difficult and it takes for ever to cure.
I started using PPG Breakthrough. I have a BM dealer that sells it and can tint it any BM colour. This paint is great. Re-Coat in a couple of hours and cured in 7 days. I did a test and sprayed a test panel, 12"x18", let it dry for 7 days, flipped it over and placed it on 4 small wooden blocks and placed a 5 lb weight on it for 2 days. I wanted to see if there would be marks or if the wood blocks wood stick to the painted surface and guess what, not a mark on the finished surface. Check out the TDS on the PPG website.

Thank you all for the various suggestions. I just sprayed my MM5 for the first time ever, using the DuraLaq Undercoat that [member=24938]JCLP[/member] recommended. Once I dialed in the flow rate it went pretty quickly. My basement is unheated, and it's late, so the sanding and second coat will have to wait until tomorrow.

Good morning Paul,

How did the spraying of the primer work out?
Wanted to show you a photo of a test panel.
This panel was painted with 2 coats of Duralaq Undercoater, 2 coats of PPG Breakthrough and I thought I would try spraying some Duralaq Acrylic Finish Waterborne clear on it and see what happens. So I sprayed one coat of clear yesterday and this is what it looks like this morning.

The glasses are there for focusing. Yes, my glasses are dirty.

I still have a lot to learn about spraying, but it's definitely not as bad as I thought it would be. A little experimentation goes a long way.

Here's a question for you: I'm using the T75G gravity gun. I find the weight and balance of the gun to be really good. In theory the nylon cup is not supposed to leak. That said, mine leaks around the lid no matter how tight I'm able to screw it down. Am I missing something?

You will probably need 3 coats, depending how thick you are laying it down, to get that perfect finish. As for your cup, it should not be leaking. Contact Fuji, talk to Jim Larin and tell him you were speaking to me and they will probably send you a new one. You may want to look at getting the PPS system. That is what I use and it's great. Ask Jim Larin about it as well as they sell the pressurized cups, liners, lids and adapters for your gun. For the T75you will need adapter #2 and the T70, you will need adapter #18.

I see a few spots where my sanding of the primer wasn't perfect, so I'll definitely be adding a couple more coats. But thanks for the heads-up! I figured the cup shouldn't be leaking when I read they went to the nylon cup to eliminate the need for a gasket, which was a weak point on the older metal cups. I'll call Jim @ Fuji tomorrow during business hours. Thanks!

I'm the person who had the rather abrupt experience at Sherwin Williams.

I called around to some of the BM stores near me and found one that stocks DuraLaq on a regular basis. I think I paid around $75 total for one can of primer and one can of semi-gloss.

They didn't give me the run-around about needing a spray booth or EPA restrictions. In fact, the person I dealt with was very knowledgeable and was able to tell me what needles and air caps to use as a starting point.

Just to clarify, this shop didn't refuse to sell it to me like the Sherwin experience Paul had, he was just being an alarmist, which is fine except he's the guy I'm looking to for advice or recommendations.  That short conversation was enough to convince me that this wasn't his area of expertise, despite the verbosity.  The other guy at the counter was silent, so I'm guessing he didn't have anything useful to add either.  Maybe I'll try Paul's suggestion and call around to see who has it in stock.  A stocking dealer is more likely to have experience with it.  Thanks guys.

I was told it could, but my guys weren’t familiar with the product so I’m not sure how complete or accurate that answer was.
