Which router?

Ok, trying to decide between the OF1400 or 2200. I'm going to be doing some miscellaneous cabinetry (built-in and kitchen cabinets). My dilemma is that I want to be able to turn some fairly large profile bits as well as take advantage of the LR32 package.  I've got a few smaller routers, but would like one that will 'do it all'.

I guess my main question is how large of a bit can I use with the 1400?

Btw, hello all, first post, but have been lurking for a bit. I'm a part-time remodeler (possibly going full-time shortly) and have been partaking in the green kool-aid for a few years.

You're going to hate this response ...

I've got an OF 1400. It's a great router and I will keep is regardless of the fact that I shouldn't have got it.

I SHOULD have got the OF 1010 and the OF 2200. Now they're both on my buy list, to buy in the near future.

The OF 1010 for LR32 and VS600 duty - the OF 2200 for the heavy freehand, track and CMS work ... This will mean the OF 1400 becomes the everything in between router and the OF 2200 can live in the CMS module unless the job is beyond the OF 1400.

Unfortunately there's no such thing as a one size fits all router.

(and I assume your aware that the LR 32 system only works with OF 1010 and OF 1400)

Kev told you about the LR 32 compatibility issues with the 2200.  Regarding how large a bit in the 1400, I haven't measured the round cutout in the base, but I know that you can not fit a 3 1/2 in raised panel bit in it thru experience.

Just noticed you're in the US ... replace "CMS" with "Router Table" (at least for the immediate future, unless you can bring one into the US).

I have those and got a Trend T11 mostly for table use as it's better than the OF2200 for inverted use.

There are several that are better than the Festool routers for table use they all have hight adjustment through the base so you have no need for a router lift.

It's actually always befuddled me as to why I've never seen an inverted router module (one with a table insert face) ... one that conforms to some sort of standard table insert size. We need a table insert "DIN" standard ... one that makes "machine modules" a pick, plug, play experience.

Could it be because you don't need a 20lb router to drill 1/4" holes 1/4" deep?  [scared]

Yes, I'm sure that's it.  I was actually refering to my inattention in my research with that comment.

I was just hoping to be able to cover all my needs with the first festool router I purchase.  I've already got a small Bosch router and a mid-size PC plunge router, but neither of them do much for dust control.  Oh well, guess I need to measure the base of the 1400 to see what size of raised-panel bit, if any, I can fit!

The OF 1400 can take a 2 1/2" maximum bit diameter and that's cutting it very close to the opening size of the base.

That's very useful knowledge!  I think that's within my needs, so the 1400 may be the way for me to go!
