Which systainer for which non Festool tools.

I'm planing on replacing my existing power tools with Festool as and when they break, but in the mean time I'm looking at buying some systainers to store a selection of other power tools.
I'm fed up of the mis-match of differing sized boxes requiring multiple trips from the vehicle to the job site so looking to streamline things.

So which systainer do you use for what tool?

You may want to start by buying a sys1, then at least you have the basic footprint, then keep moving up to sys2,3,4 & 5 as depth is needed...

I would start with a sys1, 2, &3 and try out all of your combinations to find out which fits best in which size.  There are a few "universal" inserts (I believe I have seen a drill and a grinder one).  Then make a list of how many of each you need.

I am currently going through the same thing. Going into condo buildings it works out beautifully to stack up the systainers, lock them together and roll them in. Last week I had two stacks of tools and a dewalt planer in a dewalt box on top, which drove my OCD over the edge and I just ordered a sys3 for the planer.
I have a Dewalt hammer drill in a sys1, a Ridgid belt sander in a sys2 and a Fein tool in a sys2 with the insert for it.

Here goes (i'm sure theres more)
Bosch 4 1/2" angle grinder and various discs
Erbauer oscilating multitool
Bosch Electric Planer
Sanding accessories (velcro sanding blocks of various types) pretty sure will fit in a sys 1
Makita 18v Cordless
Hammer Drill
Jigsaw (probably the first to be replaced so might hold off with the sys for this)

I've already got a CTL Midi with vac accessories and TS55 with various tracks.

I'd follow the [member=53578]travisj[/member] suggestion. Purchase 1 each of the 1, 2 & 3 Systainers and then you can place the tool along with the accessories you want to carry and go from there. The tool is only one aspect of the equation, the accessories become the real problem most of the time.

Before you buy why dont you go onto Lee Valley and download all the box outlines. They have them for the regular systainers and MIDIs. You can then print them out and lay out your tools on them. Festool and Tanos both have the heights listed on their website and you just measure the height of the tool on the page to get an idea of which systainer you need for which tool.

Angle grinder is easy sys 2 and a tanos insert

As cheese says grab a 1 and a 3 to go with that 2 and try out different combos for the others.

I'd agree the accessories are what really gain from organisation and attic lids can really help especially for drill / driver bits and multitool blades so make sure the sys1 and sys3 have attic lids.

The more you can squeeze into a sys1, the better.   

Everything you listed can probably fit into the sys1 except the electric planer and the angle grinder.
Don't waste your time and money with the polystyrene inserts, they just waste space. 

I'll try to remember to post some photos when I get home.

Makita charger needs a sys 2 or a 3 if you wanna put it on its side to maximise space

Bosch is a Sys - II  (double layer), Milwaukee Sys- III, Multimaster double layered in a Sys- III.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
I've seen a combination offer on ebay from Germany of a sys 1, 2 and 3 so think I'll invest in a set and see how I get on.

Can't remember offhand but I do know that the size 1 T loc box isn't much cop for most powertools.
I have managed to fit a Hitachi SDS drill into a size 1 box and various handtools in another but most of the other boxes are 2's and 3's.

I like the attic lid ones as well as I can store bits and bobs in the lids.

Think I just bought a 2 and a 3 and played with the tools to see what fitted.
Hitachi drill driver and rattle gun, charger and some handtools all live in a attic lid 3.
Grinder and a load of blades in a 2.
Compact De-Walt router in an attic lid 2.
Metabo Jigsaw in the 2 it came with.
Heap of handtools in a 4.
Large De-Walt lecky planer in a 3 I think, have to remove the dust port side tube to get it in there but its dead easy to do and put back on.
Festool TS55 in its own 4

Got most of my powertools in them now apart from my chopsaw and first fix Hitachi nailgun.

I don't do, assassins case neatness and fancy cutouts, I just put them into a box.

Great boxes though and three lengths and two widths fit nicely into my Clarke Large Site Box that I use as my van toolsafe. Obviously the depths of the boxes affect how many high they go

Getting very inspired by SRSemenza.

Just weighted the empty Sortimo of my Bosch GBH 2-28 vs an empty Systainer 2 and there is 1 kg (2,2 Lbs) difference !
Thinking of trimming the Bosch insert just now...  [wink] and give it a go

Edit: spent 1 hour cutting the Bosch insert and it doesn't work / fit properly. Will have to go the foam route.
What's the best foam you guys would consider ? Kaizen or anything else ?
