Why buy a smaller MFT?

This might be a silly question as I don't own a MFT yet, but do most people buy the smaller MFT as a secondary or add-on MFT?  As my money is tight I sometimes try to convince myself to buy the smaller MFT but I see the larger MFTs as a better value.  Just wondering.

Justin, Festool only offers one size MFT now. The other, smaller MFT is for the Kapex and it's not the same height as the MFT/3. Plus you can't buy it with the fence and guide for cutting. You may be able to buy those parts from Festool, I don't know. If you look around you might be able to find a used MFT800. I happen to like my full size MFT1080.

I have both the larger MFT1080 and the smaller MFT800.  After three years of owning only the larger one, I purchased the smaller one because I found the MFT1080 somewhat big and heavy to haul around to offsite jobs.  Now the MFT1080 stays in my shop.

Thanks Brice ----- I now know my way of thinking was "last generation" as Festool has come out with the new MFT/3 and the one for the Kapex --- I'm a little out of the loop  ;).  But I guess I was wondering about those still using the old MFTs.

I have both 800 and 1080 but bought the smaller as a stand for the Kapex. Having worked at home and on the job, the only thing I'm going to change is to get another 1080. The most often gotcha for me is needing a longer work surface and having to put the Kapex on the floor to get it. I've even got an extension arm on the 800, but it's never enough.... :-\    ::)    ;D

I started out with an MFT 800, and soon after bought the 1080. Just not enough room to do big projects on the 800.
As far as small work tables go, that 800 is hard to beat. Carrying the 1080 up a few flights of stairs will convince most folks of the 800's handiness.
The 1080 and 800 connected together gives good work surface area and is more solid than either seperately..
The MFT/3 and MFT Kapex are different heights.  The difference in height is the same as the bed height on the Kapex.
Hmmm, I wonder if a set of MFT3 legs would fit on a MFT Kapex.

justin,

if you can save up for the mft3,  I do custom carpentry and I have the mft3 and the 1080,  the 1080 I haul to jobs because it works great at the jobsite and use it all the time.  the size is just about perfect I also have the extension wing for it for cutting down sheet goods,  I would take the mft3, but they do not have a wing for it yet and then I will probably switch it out.

but something smaller might be to small,  what do you do usually on a daily basis, what type of work?
