Hi all -

This is my first post but have been reading/lurking for a while.  While I thought my first post would on how to do something with a tool/wood, I thought I would start with a home improvement question.  This is a terrific discussion board and i'm amazed at the craftsmanship i've seen here.  Gives me something to strive for.

The boss, a.k.a. wife, and I are looking to have some windows replaced in the house.  We chose the window, Andersen 400 series (this isnt a question about which windows are best) and are finalizing in choosing a contractor, which is where my question begins.  The quotes we rec'd are somewhat all over the place, making it hard to recognize what is a fair price, both for us and the contractor (I believe in paying for quality and building relationships for people who do work on my house).

We gave the contractors a list of requirements for the work - pvc trim (5/4 X 3 1/2), cornice at the top, bull nose sill, aluminum drip caps - so we can remove as many variables as possible from the quotes.  The windows are rather large - 30"x60" - and we're opting for new construction windows.

If anyone has done this work to their home, can you provide some ball park pricing on what you paid?

Thanks all.

I wouldn’t suggest Anderson windows. I’m going with OKNA windows on my house. Probably the best replacement window available. Install cost is ~$500-530 a window. I also got a quote for Alside windows from the same guy and it was about $100 less per window installed. I’m going with Celect Trim as well at an additional cost (not sure how much yet). Good luck on what you decide. It’s a large expense.

Two years ago we replaced all of the windows in our house, 27 units in total.  We used Pella Architect series installed by a certified independent installer with a good reputation.  I think it will be very difficult for you to tease out the answer to your question because it depends so much on the particular features in each window unit.  In our case the total package was about $37K but that price included triple panes, low E glass, blinds between the panes, finishing to match our existing interior trim, PVC exterior trim, etc.  Changing these features would move the price substantially.  I am on vacation now so I don't have access to the detailed unit by unit quotation breaking down materials and installation.  My recollection is that the smaller simpler units were as little as $400 installed while large picture windows might run over $2000.

I replaced a normal window with a transom window in the bathroom and a good friend who was a contractor did the install.  He charged me $200 but I had the materials he needed on hand.  He mentioned he typically charges $400 to $500 a window depending on what's needed.  Obviously quotes can vary by location and whether you are having to do any reframing of the openings.

Thanks all.  it looks like we're in the ballpark.  I really appreciate everyone's input.

[member=67580]ctvader[/member]  About 12 years ago we had new construction Andersen casement windows (and two french doors) installed in our addition and some to replace old windows in our home.  The exterior is brick or stucco and all our windows are trimmed on the interior with a plaster return and a marble or granite sill.  I can't comment on the cost since it was so long ago and part of the overall price of the addition.

But one thing I found really helpful was recommended to us at the time by the Andersen rep.  He suggested to have the wood window interior primed at the factory.  Turned out that the primer looks more like a finish coat and we ended up not having to do any painting at all on the windows.

Good luck!  Mike A.
