Wiring in a 240v breaker

I know this breaker is a double pole breaker, and there are two hot wires which attach to it. My question is, however, does it matter which cord goes to which part of the breaker? Since they are both hot wires, do they accomplish the same task regardless - and are interchangeable?

Don't forget a bit of black tape on the white wire so that you remember that you do not have a neutral... not required I suppose but good practice.
