Woodpecker shelf gauge alternatives

I've looked at these before but I have no experience with them. You could fabricate one and see how well it works.  [smile]  I'll guarantee it works better/faster than the individual gauge blocks I made in 1/4º increments 10 years ago for a maple tread install...that was painful.

So learning from my previous painful experience while using the 1/4º incremented blocks to install new treads, I purchased the Woodpeckers template this fall when it was offered because I knew I would be replacing treads & risers on a new garage. I only need to be spanked once to learn my lesson. [smile]

There are ssveral models of the time tested simple gauges that don't promise to do everything except pouring a cup of coffee.  If I were in the market for one I would support a small business and get the Collins Tool model.

Thank you! The Rockler one looks good enough for my occasional use, the Collins doesn't look bad either for storability.

I only need that capability rarely, and when I do, I use the same templating technique that stone countertop installers use.

I keep some 1/4” thick scrap plywood on hand, which I keep ripped to a 2” width.

I lay pieces in place where I want to measure, and using a glue gun, I attach the pieces in place locking in the angles.

I also use this method for sizing large format tiles.  I can accurately transfer complex shapes, including wall outlet openings without resorting to the use of rulers.

Of course, if you need this capability often, then some sort of dedicated jig might be useful.  But the countertop people use this method a good deal, and they stick with it until they get a very expensive laser measuring system.

This guy uses cardboard and crazy glue.  I might try that next.  But the same concept.  If you don’t need the rigidity, that might be easier.

If you're going to buy the Rockler, it looks like it is on sale for $15 off for 4 days only, through 1/15/24.

He's using acetone and some kind of plastic strip.

Collin’s makes a stair tread gauge that can be used for the same purpose.

That was the one I was thinking about.  Come to think about it, I have a use for one in the project I'm doing right now.  Order placed.  And I'll get it tomorrow!
