I use auger bits in my drill for latch and spindle holes when fitting doors. As I haven't yet found a good set that stay sharp..... its surprising what they put in doors these days....I wondered what other people use ?

Though I have seen a set of forstener bits by Festool and wondered if these would be any better and last longer ? it's just the price that puts me off at the moment.

i have had a bosch 18mm auger bit for five years now and it is still great, but thats because i run a file over it once in a while to keep it sharp. I love forstner bits but they tend to wander when used that deep in a cordless drill, the prtool bits my be different because of the extendible pilot

i find the thread a tad course on the irwin bits and hae split a door with 1 once. they do a new un that will drill a nail if hidden in there

Dean, you are right, it is a fast thread but if used on a slow speed with a good electric drill with plenty of torque then they work beutifully.  If i think there is a possibility of the door splitting i always put a clamp on the face of the door first.  No problems at all.

i use my t15, i will try the lamp trick with them, never thought of doing that really.

Mmm, I tried these at the Black Isle Show, they were quick to drive themselves in, but sometimes left a ragged edge around the hole. not what you want on a door face.
