Bench Dogs with no neck?

Hi All,

Can anyone recommend an economical source for bench dogs, with a threaded hole with no neck? In theory I could buy some bar stock but I would like them to be snug, so 19.90mm and 3/4" long. I haven't been able to find a good source.

what or how exactly would you use such a configuration for?
Some of our existing Dog sizes could be parted off without a collar in a lathe to the length you need.

Hi Hans,

I am planning to bolt two of them on to some aluminum extrusion, to create a fence. In theory they don't need to be tight. So I could use some 3/4 stock, but it'd be nice to have them tight then I don't need to tighten them from under the table.

Yes cutting the top off something like a DoubleGroove would work, I'm hoping to find something cheaper than $10/each. I need at least 10 of them.

I have some UJK Technology Parf Anchor Dogs, but I'd like to have it complete flat on the table.

+1 I have 6 of them.

Don't know if you have access to a metal or wood lathe but I have made a few on my wood lathe out of Delrin that fit nice and tight (use a negative rake carbide cutter for this material - this first one is a little rough and the neg-rake one is nice and smooth).

You might want to take a look at the Veritas Platform Saddles. See this webpage. The removable posts are what I use in such situations as yours. The fit quite nicely in my Sjögren's, but due to the flexible wings will also fit 20 mm holes. Compared to other solutions they are cheap (about $12 per set of 4).

I think he is looking for the special "stubby" dogs that Glenn offered at one time (see my post above). There is a t-track in the top of the TrackTube and it accepts the head of the bolt that is threaded into the dog. It is used to locate/fix an MFT slab to the TrackTube.

I have some nice white Delrin dogs that fir my MFTs very nicely but I’ve no idea where they came from. Delrin seems like a perfect material for this use.

I do have some dogs left over.  They are aluminum and sized to fit in a Festool MFT top snugly. Lengths are 18.5, 36, and 60.95 mm.  I use these for a variety of special templates, jigs and fences.  The 18.5 and 36 mm lengths have a 1/4"-20 thread all the way through.  The 18.5 also has a slot in one end so it can be tightened with a coin or tool (this was for a special use).  The 60.95 length has a 1/4"-20 thread about 1/2" deep on only one end.  PM or email me if interested.

I chamfer all of my dog holes on every top I have or make. It makes using certain dogs very quick and easy.
I normally zip round them with a router.

You just need the chamfer on the dog to sit flush with the bench top.
Get a piece of scrap, put a couple of 20mm holes into it.

Set your chamfer router bit so it’s just making contact with the surface, route that hole, and put a chamfered Parff dog in, and test with a square, the square should go right up to the body of the dog, and not catch on the chamfer collar. If it does catch, go very slightly deeper with the router and test again, once at the right depth, go around all of your bench holes.

If you went slightly over depth, it’s not an issue, but testing on scrap, should make sure it’s perfect.
