For furniture or "upstairs" cabinets, that just won't do.

I had the same problem.  The Domino solves it.  I don't waste time gluing the dominos when I use pocket screws--just spread glue on the flats and tighten the screws.  Hope this helps.

Just seems like the Dominos alone are the answer. They have to be as strong or stronger than pocket holes. Maybe they take some clamps for 30 minutes or so, but it just seems closer to the true mortise and tenon joints for good cabinets, face frames, etc. For my workshop, I could go either way and am completely satisfied with pocket holes alone for drawers in workstands and in my workbench. Made with 18mm baltic birch, they are stronger than I'd ever need and slight movement during assembly isn't a problem. Actually I've almost eliminated the movement anyway if they are clamped right. Dominos are just a nicer solution for finer furniture and cabinets. I would leave the pocket holes out for those. That's just me though.
