Good photos. Do the diagonally placed planks help reinforce the structure or are they like that for aesthetic reasons?

Both reasons, but the primary being to stiffen up the entire structure.  Sheathing diagonally adds a lot of rigidity over horizontal or vertical when you're using boards rather than sheets; it just locks everything together and you can really feel the difference before and after.
