I love the Festool gear I already own and want other stuff based largely on what I read on here. I get the sanders, the Domino, the MFT, the routers etc although I have never even seen any of them in the flesh. However I have always said that the whole thing with Festool drills and bits leaves me completely stone cold.

Also although none of us would admit to purchasing tools based on aesthetics I also think the Festool drills look a bit pants as well. I might part with hard earned dollars if they at least looked sexy. They are all badly proportioned.

I'll get my coat..........

Go test one of the drills+ some accessories and get back to us.

Pants?

I would like to but I can't trust myself near Festool tools in the flesh if I have my wallet with me. I have 4 x Bosch 10.8s so have no need for a quick change system and I'm happy with what they achieve. Having sad that I was happy with what I had before I bought my TS and CT combo but I would never contemplate going back to my old saw now.

Pants = rubbish = naff. I just think the Festool drills look like something Ronco or K-Tel would have designed.

To the gentleman that suggested that I try the drill and centrotech stuff.....If you notice in my previous postings, I have a CXS drill from Festool and have bought a couple of the ridiculously overpriced Centrotech driver bits.  Guess what, I love the drill and the only thing nice about the Centrotech system is the quick change capability and bit locking (which is available on lots of hex shaft systems).  I would not be here complaining if I did not try them.  It appears that more than one person here seems to think $425 is a bit high for some drill bits and drivers.

To respond to the question of the hex drivers not being standardized and Centrotech not being proprietary to be inconvenient.  I have to call BS on that one.  I agree that the locking mechanisms on hex adapters not being standard but even it the locking mechanism does not work, usually the bit will go into a drill from another manufacturer.  I regularly use bits in a Milwaukee compact driver, a Dewalt 18V drill, and a handheld Klein screwdriver.  No problem there.  Now if Festool wanted to make a highly precise hex socket and highly precise bits to go with it, I would have a choice and no problem with them at all.  The fact that they rounded off the corners of the centrotech bit serves exactly one purpose I can see.....It allows me to stick a Centrotech bit into my Dewalt, Milwaukee, or my screwdriver but prevents me from sticking their bits into the Festool quick change Centrotech chuck.  Maybe one of the Festool engineers would care to say why rounding over the hex shaft improves the Centrotech system...maybe there is a good reason for that but it better be a pretty compelling reason to make your system incompatible with every other quick change bit set in the world.

As far as the other bits....I like the FAMAG bits a lot.  I have a forstner bit set from them and like it alot.  They are just not real highly available here in the US.  The Colt bits are distributed by Woodcraft and I like those a lot too.  The only downside I have seen with the Colt bit is that for some reason it seems to try to feed itself pretty aggressively and if you don't watch out it will pull your driver very hard into the cut.  If you guys looked closely at the comparisons better the Centrotech bit, the FAMAG, and the Colt, did anyone notice how much more smoothly machined the hex bit was vs the Centrotech?

I would love to pay $US425 for a Centrotec set !!!

I think it'll cost me over $600 this side of the pond.

This could be the thing that tips me towards an eBay Festool purchase - There's no voltage differences to worry about!

Just because they are high-priced doesn't mean they are expensive...

At over $400 for mostly-duplicate bits it's certainly more than I'd want to pay for it right now, but something my other Festool products has taught me is not to just look at the price tag while evaluating their tools and such...  there are often "hidden" advantages that make up the difference.

The contents of the Centrotec Set changes from year to year.
For the sake of clarity it would be best for us to refer to which "Set" we are referring to.
In my opinion, any of them with a bunch of sockets would fall into the overpriced category, as items such are readily available with lifetime warranties for far less.

And lastly, I do fell sorry for the members Down Under. THOSE are some eye popping prices.

Hi snaslund,

Happy first post !  [smile]

Weather  or not the set (s) are overpriced or a good/bad value is greatly dependent on how much of the set  an individual user will use, what they  do , and how they work.  Lots of factors involved besides just the price compared to other brands.

I agree. I drove my self crazy trying to decide if I was going to buy the current set, because I already have the (09?) set. No matter how I did the math, it was just too expensive for what's in the box IMO. That being said, I bought the damned thing anyway, lol.

What I really wanted was the 1/4 and 1/2 inch socket bits with the screwdriver handle. First I tried to sweet-talk my Dealer into ordering those three parts for me, but in the end he told me that he can't get them yet.

Uber expensive? yup. Indulgent? yup. But I use the heck out of them, and my obsessive nature really appreciates that everything is laid out in a nice, orderly fashion in the plastic trays. There really is no excuse for losing your expensive bits if you've got empty spaces in your tray when you close the systainer.

I'll probably buy the next set they put together in three years too. It's a curse.

In North America it may be a limited edition set, but in the ROW it is a permanent addition to the Festool line-up despite being called a 2010 set. I would not anticipate any changes to the make-up of the set in the near or medium term.

The set of drills from FAMAG are the best drills I ever have used.

So what did that set cost you Ingo?
They don't do that set now, it's either a 5pce,  5-12mm or a10pce set that goes to 16mm from 3mm
