Does anyone use a cyclone with HL850 Planer and CT unit / Shopvac?

I have the same configuration too.  My Penn State drum hasn't collapsed yet. Maybe I should start looking for a steel drum with a similar lever lock closing ring. I know McMaster-Carr sells various sizes.

I am a bit bummed myself. I really thought that this was "the" great clearview C22 combination. I sent an email to Penn State to see what they think and asked if they have had any failures like this before.

Thanks for the heads up on the McMaster Carr source. By chance do you have a link?

http://www.mcmaster.com/          is a great source of industrial supplies "since 1901".

You can't link to a specific item or page there. You are always taken to the front page which is a very powerful search/table of contents page. It has to be this way. The latest edition of the catalog was delivered a couple of days ago. The index begins on page 3676 and adds another 100 pages itself.

I'm wondering, is the compression force on the debris container any higher than it is on the vac itself? If it isn't, would it be cheaper to buy a cheap shop vac and throw it all away except for the tub?

Bluenose,

In Mike's link, Ned has a post where he mentioned a "dent".  It's probably difficult to see now since you have lots of "dents", but did you notice any new dents in the drum lately?

Thanks,

Dan.

I didn't receive a response from Penn State to my email so I gave a call today. The conversation I had with their tech support person (Cliff) was a bit confusing but the jist of the conversation was that in his view this is the wrong product for this application. I think he was trying to tell me that this drum is used in their system on the positive pressure side and that it is not rated for high negative pressures. I asked him many times "so in your opinion, this drum is not the right choice for a shopvac mini cyclone system. He responded no.

So I am going to check out the McMaster Carr steel drums because I miss watching the dust go round and round.

Cheers, Bill

Okay, Festool Cyclone take 2.

I received my new drum from McMaster Carr and it looks great. I think that there is no chance this one will implode. It is only a bit wider but it is long so it still fits on the C22 nicely but holds more stuff.

I am still planning to use fixed ducting from the vacuum to the cyclone and interconnecting the whole system with grounding tape. But for now I am good to go.

Cheers, Bill

Bill,
That looks great. I would be interested in the part number also. I'm thinking about getting a second cyclone.

Here is the catalog page from McMaster-Carr. The shipping was an extra $9.50 from CA to WA.

It does seem to be the perfect size.

I fired it up last night after the silicone and paint dried and everything looks good. I only wish that I would have started with this since I hate to buy things twice.  :(
