I received my domino 500 last week and have been making floating tenons ever since. What a great tool! However I noticed in the instruction manual it says that you should only change mortise width sizes while the motor is running. It has three settings and I'd like to eventually use those other settings. Anyone change the sizes before it was running? Any problems? Maybe the manual has a typo? Doesn't make sense to me but I'm just wondering if it matters? Any ideas?

It's definitely not a typo, but the reason for it and the inner workings escape me.

Ok, then I will only change sizes while its running. Thanks for the reply, I guess it really does pay to read the entire manual.

The reason is to keep the gears from grinding just like changing gears in the car. It's highly recommended that you only change the mortise width while the machine is running.

Makes sense! Thanks for the reply! What an amazing machine ehh? I put rails and styles together in mins instead of hours!

The supplemental manual for the Domino 700 states not to adjust the width dial during a plunging operation.  This makes sense.  However I am not sure if changing the width setting is same as the 500 i.e. whilst the motor is running.

It's safe to assume its the same machine internally as the 500 just on a larger platform. I'm assuming the mortise size changing rules are the same as the 500.Change sizes while runningonly. My df500 manual says not to change mortises while plunging also. The 700 is now on my wish list !

There is a big difference. The 700 you switch widths with the motor off. The 500 you need to switch when the motor is running.

With both of them, you should NOT be plunging when switching widths.

Internally they are not the same.

Bkharman, Thanks for clearing that up! The FOG makes us all learn from each other! Well done!
