domino double plunge? or vacuum

Ok, I have a domino that I want to use at work. Problem is that it's a large house, with over 20 carpenters. Tools left on a bench tend to get "borrowed" and appear elsewhere on the site, sometimes outside! grrrrrr

Ok, so the company biscuit joiner in use is not completely working, so I took my domino in, blew some folks away :D anyway I found that with the larger domino's (6's)you really do need a vacuum. OR can I get away with a double plunge? I've found out that if you don't use a vacuum the domino's are really tight, making assembly a bit difficult.

Due to the transient nature of the crew/tools, I am reluctant to take in my CT26.

What's your experience? is the vacuum absolutely necessary? or can I get away with a double plunge?

I would never use the domino without extraction

if there is a shop vac on site you could use that
 
The Domino works much better with a vac attached.  It's not significant but cutting (re-cutting) chips without the vac will lower the life of your Domino cutters.  Perhaps you could use a "cheap" vac that you don't mind getting banged around on the job site (instead of your CT).
The cutters & mortises are "happier" with free flowing chip removal.   [smile]
 
A few days ago I was cutting some tenons with my head in the "FOG" and I thought my cutter was getting dull but, I realized that I forgot to attach the vac. system  The only thing dull was my brain, cutting without a vac system produces rougher mortises and more heat build-up on the tool.
 
You'll definitely want to clear the mortise out, but you don't need to use a vac.  When I did a stair project, I didn't string the CT hose up to be able to use it.  Instead, when I was done, I went back with the air hose and blasted them clean.  You likely have an airhose running around.

After you mentioned that the Domino could walk off on that job site then mentioned the biscuit joiner, I thought the rest of the post was going to talk about how to take a Domino and install it inside the housing of a cheap biscuit joiner  [tongue]
 
I believe (how's that Ken [tongue]) Festool says a vac is required for the Domino.  Maybe Shane or Rick can chine it.
 
I think you are right as far as the company line goes, Brice.

I have used my Domino once without vacuum. I was building a shed floor at a friend's house and forgot the vac. I punched a bunch of mortises with no vac and they all came out fine but I did have to blow them out to get the Dominos in.

It probably wasn't the best thing for the bit but it worked fine.

My experience is that the Domino is one of the Festools where there is no upper limit to dust extraction. Dominoes are not like sanders. So, any shop vac into which a hose with a 27mm tool end can be inserted should work just fine. I agree with many who keep their Domino running between plunges, so I have yet to find a reason to stop and start my dust extractor between plunges.

I use a CT22 or CT36 with my own Dominoes because I own those and I dislike the dusty exhaust air from typical shop vacs. Just remember, I use my Dominoes in my shop, so spending slightly more for a well-filtered CT to save clean-up is cost effective for me and reduces frustration.
 
I do not have any answers specific to the dominos.  I do not own one.  i only have a bucket that I carry with me every time i go to my local toy store. the bucket to avoid making a puddle of drool on the floor as i walk past dominos and all the other great toys on display.  ::)

As far as the unwanted portability of tools away from job sites, the first step is to get a bucket of pink paint and then........... [scratch chin]

Good idea, Tinker.  Maybe add tassels to the dust port so they fly around from the air vents nearby.  And, glitter anyone?

Wino, You've stumbled onto the perfect scam -- get you wife a new festool on EVERY occasion.  If she decides to return it, rant that she never likes the gifts that you get her & soon she'll stop returning them.  Next complain that she never uses them & ask if she minds if you do...  [tongue]

[big grin]Great idea!  Festool could offer a whole line of "stealth tools" camoflaged to look like black and decker or harbor freight.  Those would be totally safe.

Also like Tinker's 'paint it pink' idea.

Pink and bedazzled could attract other thieves that you wouldn't normally find on a job site.

Pretty sure the guys on the site would be keeping an eye on those thieves, though...

Ok thanks, some good ideas here. I can smuggle my domino into the work site in my back pack LOL it's not really that bad, more of "we need this space so we moved everything" mentality.

I like the idea of using the company vacuum - I'm going to do that. some duct tape, and away we go.

I can't help it, I'm looking for excuses to use my domino LOL and also that biscuit joiner on site, even when it's working is just so old school.

Oh, and adding pink or sequins to the domino? you tryin to get me beat up or somethin?  [crying] LOL hmmm mabey one of those hand held shark vacuums attached.... :D

Seriously, thanks for the info I think I can actually use one of the on-site vacuums.
 
This gives me a great idea for something Festool could incorporate into its vacuum design. A key that is necessary to operate a vacuum. But not a traditional key that must be inserted. More like the new keys that are used in cars today that only need to be in your pocket, in close proximity to the car. And if they were unique, then the problem of theft or even borrowing would go away.
