Festool DF500 Connector System

Hi Everyone

I asked Festool UK to send me a sample set of their new Domino 500 Connector System and it arrived about 10 days ago. I have had a few practice goes with it, discussed the system with several friends and now have the video.


For those that watch it all, my friend here in the UK who bought the complete set (a few days before mine arrived) from the cheapest place at that time (Axminster) and he is delighted. He uses Lamello a lot but this fills some gaps (sic).

I wanted to provide a reference video for those buying or about to buy the system as it may otherwise appear complicated. In fact it is very simple to use and produces really good joints.

I had a look at it last month. Its a nice kit. If i needed to make KO cabinets, that kit would be sitting in my shop right now.

Maybe in the days when you were moving around the world - a few knock down cabinets and tool storage units might have been useful.

Unfortunately though plywood is so expensive now that sometimes I take the easier and cheaper way out. Full bookcase, with hardware, edged, and ready to assemble for less than the price of a sheet of ply/melamine these days.

Any project videos planned in the near future?

I think we all go the Ikea route from time to time. But the Ikea things might manage one move (disassemble and reassemble) but no more. For a nice bookcase for a son or daughter leaving home and wanting to treasure something from Dad....

I am not sure what my next big project will be - I have a lot of family things gong on this year and my wife and I spend a lot of our spare time doing some care work for an aged aunt and mother-in-law.

Did you like the Isometric MFT3 top ?

Yes, took me a second viewing to grasp the concept but that was on me. Sometimes I have YouTube videos on while I work and don't pick up all the details on the first viewing.

I saw a very interesting review of this system along side the Lamello version.  Make up your own mind but the Lamello looks a lot easier to deal with.

Don't have the Lamello, but his observations regarding some of the naggy features of the 500 connectors accord with my experience, particularly when using them in soft wood or ply.  That said, they do ultimately get the job done.
