i think the benefit of the 2,3,7,8 is that it will reduce the need to count tick marks which could speed up marking,  your brain would become accustomed to the fact that the first small tick after 0 is 1, first large tick is 2 second large tick is 3 second small tick is 4 and so on...

As a life long user of metric tapes I can definitely confirm a brain becomes accustomed to the 4 smaller markings too, without the need of an extra marking somewhere in the middle.

When you need to find the 4, you don't start counting from the 0 and then 4 up, you start counting at the 5 and go down 1. Same for the 3, you start at the 5 and go down 2. Easy as pie.

Eventually you don't need to count at all anymore. You just "see" it at once, using the bigger 0 and 5 markings to reference from.

I agree with Alex, once you get used to the metric scales it's much easier. Counting up or down 1 2 or 3 marks from the 5's or 10's is easy as. A lot of rulers and tapes now have the half millimetre markings as well but that can get a little hard too see if you don't have good eyesight, but it does help a bit with accuracy. 1mm doesn't sound much on a big job but on small things it can seem like the grand canyon [laughing]

Your eyes have to count if you can't see shx&!  Of course, dudes...anybody can count one back from five, hell...not everyone can see that, though. If you don't get my idea, then maybe you will someday...when you're older or more blind?
