First Frame

Thanks for posting this, David! I'm getting close to making a custom mirror for my bathroom using some S4S from the big blue box, so it's particularly nice to be reminded of the gotchas with that.  [unsure]

I have made loads of frames and never had one break apart at the miter and I have never used a domino. The glue is strong and more times than not the miter does not come apart, but the frame will crack up and away from the miter if  there is a lot wood shrinkage, etc..

Better than a domino would be mitered half lap joint. Much more glue surface and much better at keeping the joint tight over time. If pressure was going to be applied at the joint during use like a cabinet door that gets slammed then maybe a Domino would be helpful(still I would go half lap), but that is not the case for something hanging on a wall like a mirror.

The frame looks very nice.

1/ the rebate would end up as a square corner, not requireing any chisel work. Glass is usually cut square.
2/ the finished section allows for it to be marked for size on the back face and cut face down on the Kapex, also less chance of break out in the face mouldings.
3/ A larger project may prove to be unwieldy to move about to route later.

Excellent, Rob! Just the sort of instruction I'm looking for. Much obliged.

I am always happy to help, where I can, people who want to learn and have an enthusiasm for our craft. Can't wait for your next project.  [big grin]

David the frame looks great.  I would have done all the routing prior to assembly.

I have serious shop envy.

If I am worried about mitres on frames I use the lamello half plastic biscuits - they are available as halves in both directions if everyone understands what I mean: Fixo E20-L and H.  Obviously no good on really thin frames - then I use V nails.
Anyone here got a Hoffman?

Regards,
Richard
