FS rail positioning jig

My understanding, and my experience, has been that the TS55 when "tilted" to make a miter cut will cut along the splinter guard the same as when it is set to 90 degrees.

You are correct...here's a shot, in order, of the TSC, HKC & Mafell MT 55 adjusted to 45º on a Festool rail. Both Festool saws touch the splinter strip while the Mafell is 2-3 mm away from it.

And if you then ran a TS 75 on the same rail your splinter guard would be cut back about 1mm. If you then set the TS 75 to cut a 45* bevel it would cut about a half mm away from the freshly cut splinter guard.

I think it scandalous that the TS 75 doesn’t match the TS 55 straight from the factory but it’s shocking that the much revered Mafell saws have such an imprecise relationship with the splinter guard at maximum bevel. From what I’ve read, the Mafell saws of the same model don’t even match, at max bevel.

1. Interesting information Michael ...as I don't own a TS 75.

2. I agree, my TS 55, HKC & TSC arrived at 3 different settings. The TSC & HKC were close but the TS 55 was way out. I've never understood in the age of lasers & vision systems why these tools couldn't be set to within .010" (.25 mm) of each other. If they were factory set within .010", that'd probably be good enough for 80% of the users.

3. I was really surprised when I first noticed that the Mafell "fell away from the splinter strip" when the blade was beveled.  [eek]  Every other feature on the saw is killer it's just too bad about the bevel situation.  [mad]
