I liked Peter's char making videos so much I spread them out over two evenings, and they gave me gate ideas.

So I am doing a gate...

And using that to justify the use of a Domino...
The first gate is ~1600-mm wide and ~1600-mm high.
Thinking of a top and bottom rail (or is it a stile?) with 2 vertical "ends" butted into the top and bottom, and another 2 verticals so that I have room for 3 insert panels with hardwood ply.
The verticals and stiles will all come out of ~45-mm think Mereti or maybe Kapur.
So likely ~45-mm square.

Will I need a "Z" shape with a diagonal to keep it from parallelogramming?
or...
If I use pairs of 8, 10, or 12-mm dominos at each joint will that be good with the plywood floating panels to maintain rigidity?

Use the Sipo Domino Tenons for weather resistance.

When you do your Z-bracing, you might want to consider notching the top and bottom rail to lock with the cross-brace.  I built this gate to replace the original one at a friend's home several years ago.  Wish I'd had the Domino then, but I didn't.  This gate is the only one in that development that hasn't sagged over time.

And remember the brace goes from top latch side to bottom hinge so it takes the weight  You often see gates hung incorrectly [eek] when you know how they go!

I used dominos to build the "Z" brace on this gate a couple of weeks ago.....

Created a VERY strong bond, and used sipo dominos.

The Mrs wants more of an opaque door than a Z gate.
So I was envisioning it more as a paneled door.
That makes the Z somewhat problematic unless I need to have the Z.
How do door get away with it? Just because the base is tall enough?

That is a big gate, you will need much bigger frame for it to work like a door with floating panels. With that size framing you would be better building it so that the ply panels are fixed and hold the gate square, this will stop the gate sagging so you won't need the Z on the back.

Thanks Doug - I should prolly sketch it up...

Q) Should I pin the ply in with dominoes, rather than just laying in a dado?

Q) The next question is to use a 12 or 14-mm dominos, or pair up a couple of smaller ones (10s or 12s) in each joint?

Q) Then whether to use marine varnish or an epoxy to keep it sealed for out door use?

Make scope-creep last night when the Mrs-H showed me her ideas and requirements:
Ideas:
- Moorish Islamic pattern
- Let some light through

Requirements:
- Not able to be climbed easily
- Not being able to see through it

I am rubbing my chin...

You might want to consider frosted plexiglass (Perspex) for the translucent aspect.  If it has to be absolutely unbreakable, consider frosted lexan.  You can get polished material and use an orbital sander with 220 grit to frost it yourself.

yeah Willy - I came to a similar conclusion today.
Picked up some Lexan samples. One is called pebble and is rough on one side.
It (Lexan==Polycarbonate) has a UV coating and the Acrylic did not.

Then the fair Mrs-H showed me a non see through gate, so I am still chin rubbing.
