how much faster is the 150/5 over the 150/3?

I have been using the 150/3 for a couple of months now and I love it so much I have been thinking about getting the 150/5 to handle the courser grits (up through 150).I don't know how much faster the 150/5 removes material so I am wanting to hear FROM THOSE WHO HAVE EXPERIENCE USING BOTH SANDERS what your opinion is on this.Has anyone done time tests to determine possible time savings using the larger orbit of the 150/5 ?

I'd say it is 30-50% more aggressive. RO-150FEQ, RAS115.04 might be more suitable.  It depend on what are you trying to do.

I just did a quick, down and dirty, highly unscientific test on a coarse mahogany board with 50 grit Rubin with the 2 sanders. Just wanted to get them smooth, not swirl free, and not  continuing with finer grits. Took somewhere less then a minute ~ 40 seconds with the 150/5 and about 55 seconds  with the 150/3. To smooth out the gouges I sliced into the boards took about 2 minutes with the 150/5 and about 2 and a half minutes with the 150/3.
Again, terribly unscientific, but would say that since you already  have the 150/3, I don't know how much value you'd get by getting the 150/5. Consider the Rotex 150/5 where you'd see the difference big time.

Thanks for the replies guys and especially for the quick test Bob.It sounds like about what I expected. While it isnt a significant time savings it does add up over the course of a few projects.I have a Bosch dual mode sander so I really don't need the 150 rotex at this point.I have been thinking about getting the 150/5 and adding a hard pad for that one and keeping the soft pad on the 150/3 for the final couple of grits.

Hi,

I have the 150/5 with the soft and hard pads. You will find that the hard pad will speed in material removal over the soft.
