They’ve been around for many years but I have never seen them mentioned here.
I have an old Black & Decker Workmate. A very useful piece of portable equipment and amazingly sturdy considering the size and price.
They also sell some resin molded bench dogs. I don’t know what kind of resin they use, but they have been extremely sturdy and surprisingly inexpensive. Not for all of your work, but for light to medium duty, perfectly useable.
Unfortunately all (or most) of the resin bench dogs listed on Amazon for Workmate, are copies, and I don’t know if they are using the same grade of resin.
I use my Workmate as an oversized bench vise. The bench dogs allow me to hold larger pieces securely. So far, I have not broken any of the plastic dogs, but I am only using them for holding, not for squeezing things closed.
As I recall, I spent about $2.00 each for these. They are likely more expensive now, but from my Google search I cannot tell if the advertised pieces are Black & Decker or copies.
But it seems that they are $3.00 to $4.00 each (which sounds like a lot for a small piece of plastic—but still cheaper than most options).
