Is Festool's patent expired on the TS saws?

This may give you some idea where 'local' is.

...OK pal, you get anal over it if you really must. I'm going to try and be constructive instead.

Oh and don't you just like the soft start motors? Pity Festool can't get around to making that improvement.

Woodentop - You might want to get your facts straight.  Here's a quote from the Festool specs on the TS55:

"- MMC electronics with 6 control and monitoring functions, including soft start, constant speed under load, stepless speed adjustment, temperature and current-triggered overload protection"

Sorry, not Sri Lankan.

I called the local Makita vendor and asked if they were expecting to carry the saw. The salesman was quite knowledgeable about the new system and told me they would have stock within a week or two. He told me the price was around $500 and also mentioned they had a 5 foot and 7 foot rail. A 7 foot rail seems strange to me and am thinking he may have that part wrong.

Seeing as how Festool lacks availability in Canada and all of my friends love my saw and sander I could see them jumping on the new Makita. People like to see and touch tools before buying them and you can't do that locally with Festool.

It's kinda like walking into Lee Valley everyday and seeing the Veritas handplanes. You can have one jump in your shopping cart while you are at the store and have it home in a couple of hours or you can order a Lie Nielsen or Clifton and get it 3 weeks later.

FWIW several of the Mafell saws have a moving riving knife so I doubt it's a patent issue.  I've never tried one but I like the look of the Mafell with the"roll up" rail - that would be really useful on site.  Completely off topic but Mafell makes me think of Protool who have similar tools for carpentry work - do they sell Protool in the US?  They never seem to be mentioned on the FOG.

If it's a North/South thing, and you aren't whistling Dixie, then you must be Irish :D ;)

I doubt Protool is available in the US yet - Protool is a sister company of festool (both owned by TTS). Their ranges are quite separate: Protool make 1st fix tools, Festool does the 2nd fix tools. Protool is likely to come to the UK sometime next year to complement the Festool range.

BTW, the Makita has one seriously big downside - according to the pstools site it is "manufactured in the UK". Oh dear. Guess it'll have a short warranty period, then.  ;D

On a more serious note, from the pictures it seems that the rail is identical to festool's.

Well done Lou. At last some less emotional stuff!

Well done, "Woodentop."  At least you weren't nasty in judging his post instead of simply thanking him for correcting your erroneous claim that the Festool saw does not have soft start.

Protool has a very limited range of tools here in the USA, mainly their larger timber frame tools. It is not imported by Festool USA.

They do have some cool pieces, I especially the drill bits.

Ah, ok. I stand corrected. Though I am a bit surprised!

Do you know who imports it, then?

OK, but I not into wasting time on such matters. Are you certain about the soft start?? LOL. If you are it's not a very good soft start! Go switch yours on.....if you have one.....see what I mean?

According to a poster on this thread, Makita's rails although similar, are not compatible. See post #3.

Oh, first post . Hello everyone!

I'm confused why you're here on FOG WoodenTop, you seem to only be interested in starting conflict. In my experience with you, including your last post, you do want to waste time, not only your own, but other's as well.

My Soft start seems to work as advertised. I have no issues with it. If you are unsatisfied with your Soft Start TS saw please send me an e-mail offline. I have several friends who would like to buy one and you can get the Makita
