Kapex laser alignment

I finally got around to making a ZCI for my Kapex last night. The lasers on my kapex have been off ever since I bought it a year ago.

It's pretty easy to adjust them.  See page 28 of the supplemental manual.  All you need is a 2.5mm hex key.  I gently punched the holes through my label with a roofing nail to get a cleaner hole.

OK, dumb question, but only ask because it's been a year as you mentioned.

Are you sure you were locked into 0 when you made that cut into the ZCI?

Yes, I was locked into 0  [thanks] I also need to do the 4 cut method of making sure everytning is squared up because I think it could be off just a bit.

I recently had to adjust my lasers.  After adjusting the lasers when the saw is at rest the lasers line perfectly.  When I bring the head down they skew to the side, is that normal.

Yeah I am following this question..Is it the "Yaw" that resolves this? I feel like I get a little runout on my laser too.

Don, it sounds like a convergence issue and the lasers aren't properly calibrated. I would recommend going back through the steps in the supplemental manual and that should resolve the problem.

I gotta be honest, I am not sure the lasers are supposed to be in line with the entire cut line on your ZCI..I have one too, lasers are adjusted to the blade and I am able to sight my pencil marks just inside and take them (or not) when I make the cut.

Correct me if I am wrong, but after following the instructions in the manual it seems you just need to be concerned with the lines where the blade comes down into the workpiece correct? In other words should I care that the lasers run out a little far down the ZCI when the saw head is up and all the way back at rest?

Just want to make sure I am thinking about this the right way and the lasers should align where the blade kerfs only or the entire span it's able to cut?  I have a similar problem after making a ZCI to Dan where the lasers run off a little. But where the blade is they are fine. Let me know if I am making no sense..

Rick where are you when we need you!!

My issue is to the right of the blade, the laser is off almost 1/8". I made the ZCI last night and the laser line to the right shows the issue well (that is why I posted it) I'm not saying that I expect the laser to be lined up perfectly down the entire length of the ZCI when the saw is in the up position. I'll make some adjustments and go from there...

Mine are right on through out the cut.

Ok just to clarify..Through the cut meaning as you cut? Or head up, sitting all the way back they line up with your cut line in the ZCI from end to end?

Sorry, while I am actually making the cut  .....  I can watch the laser line on my mark while the blade is spinning and cutting as I push the saw through the cut.

I suggest going through the full calibration process very carefully.  [thumbs up]

I think it's most important the lasers line up through the kerf area and not the entire cutting capacity. But would like to hear more from the experts on this. For me, l can put my the head of my saw anywhere in the cut span, and lower it up and down and the lasers stay the same. However..When the saw is all the way back, head up lasers on, the left laser runs into the cut line down towards the end. The ZCI makes this much more evident.

Not sure whats right here..I blame myself for messing with the factory settings, replacing blades, and adding ZCIs. Changing my blade led to more work than I asked for since I had to recalibrate my Kreg stop system as well.

What thickness material are you guys making ZCIs out of? Forgive me, I just got mine two hours ago and haven't had time to play with it, Eric

You will need either a thickness planer or to simply resaw a piece of scrap you have laying around in  table saw to the thickness right. Congrats on the saw.

Hi Eric,

I used 1/4" aspen. I cut it slightly oversized then used a file and hand sanded it to make a snug fit so I do not need to screw it in. It took all of 10min.

Thanks guys, Peter I'm gonna check that out tonight. Taking the day off tomorrow cause I'm going to VT this weekend. Gotta get my extension wings to fit the Kapex and run up to Woodcraft to get new scales. Basically same exact set up, just better saw. Need to be making built ins mon am, so I'm under a time crunch. Everything was great out of the box. Haven't done four cut method yet, Eric
