Kapex ??

Has anyone pointed out that the cutting depth is 120mm (4 11/16") for a flat board? And, as previously noted crown that is 168mm tall can be cut against the fence. That's almost 6 5/8".

If dust collection is the Festool standard we have

come to know and love.

They can't make enough to satisfy the US market.

While crusing through the Kapex high res photos that I downloaded, I noticed something.  Take a look at the attached pic.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the laser is in the handle.

Actually, I am quite amazed.  If you take a close look at the pic of the kapex cutting notches, isn't that the most amazing thing you have ever seen.  i am still trying tto figure out if they are trying to show the flexibility of the saw, or the blade.  Look close and explain how they do that.  I would buy a blade that could do that in a minute.

If true, this means that you can see exactly where the blade will hit the board on both the top and front.  More importantly, it means that you can see the both the miter AND the bevel.  You can mark a miter and/or a bevel on the board and see if it's correct BEFORE you cut!

(My drool meter just pegged!)

I think the only problem is April 1 of what year?  The April 1 2007 date appears to be for Europe.     (unless, of course, Europe is where you are, in which case CONGRATULATIONS -- GO GET ONE!!!!)

When I first read your post, I went off to see if I could find the manual on-line, but I couldn't track one down. However I had another look tonight, and it's now up on the German Festool website 

Go to the Manuals Download page at http://www.festool.de/webmanual_international/index.php?sLanguage=English

Click on "Trimming saw"

Click on "KAPEX"

You can download two files:

kapex_ks_120.zip
kapex_kappanschlag.zip

The first file is the manual for the KS 120 Kapex saw itself, and the second is for the KA-KS 120 trimming attachment.

If you download and open kapex_ks_120.zip, you will be presented with two versions of the Kapex manual:

468072_004_kapex_ks_120.pdf
468172_004_kapex_ks_120.pdf

The first of these (notice the 4th digit in the filname is different) is the larger file, and is the one which contains the English and Spanish versions of the manual.

Once the PDF file is opened, you'll find 7 pages of diagrams, and 7 pages of English text.

Similarly, the English and Spanish version of the manual for the trimming attachment is the larger of the two, and with a zero in the fourth place in the filename, ie 468079_002_kapex_kappanschlag.pdf

Everyone,
There has been a tremendous interest in the Kapex, for good reason.  But, thinking about how important it is for us to spread accurate information, I contacted Festool USA today and asked for the official word.

Here are some details I got from the top:
1. The Kapex is selling very well in Europe, in fact much better than Festool had expected.
2. The Kapex does not yet have UL approval for sale in the US.  That appears to be the main holdup. 
3. The estimated time of arrival in the US is early 2008.

That's the word.

went to see a kapex yesterday nice saw but does not have the cut capacity of my dewalt 708 and at £810 or $1620 and not avaliable in 110v for another 6 months i am not in any hurry now to change brands

Yes, but the 708 is a 12" saw, and the Kapex is a 10". I would expect any 12" saw to have better capacity. From my research, the Kapex capacity is very competitive with every other 10" SCMS. Festool seems to be targeting trim work, vs. a 12" saw which becomes very useful with construction. The Kapex is a rather compact unit for its size, but it would be interesting to see what a festool 12" SCMS would look like. I guess if you want to spend a lot of money on a real nice mitre saw you can always get a Hoffman Omegahttp://www.hoffmann-usa.com/htm/miter_saws/intro_miter_saws.htm
Not very portable though.

I just looked at the Hoffmann USA site.

I don't know anything about Hoffmann tools, and I am not really in the market for a miter saw at the moment, but checking out the site does make me curious.  What's unique or different about Hoffmann?

i know the dewalt is a 12" saw but it's also half the cost and still a quality saw  which then gives me £400 to spend on other tools or stock up the beer fridge  ;D ;D i do fancy another router at the moment :-\
